About the role

We are looking for a commercially minded, technically capable FP&A Analyst to join Steer's Strategic Finance team.

Steer is a global consultancy operating across transport, infrastructure and energy. Our Strategic Finance team supports the Group's financial performance, commercial decision-making and strategic growth, working closely with senior leadership and business stakeholders across our international operations.

This is a broad, forward-looking finance role combining financial planning and analysis, financial modelling, business partnering, management reporting and data analytics.

We are looking for someone who goes beyond producing financial reports. The successful candidate will be curious about the business, understand what drives performance, challenge assumptions and translate complex financial information into meaningful insights and recommendations.

An element of the role will be the continued development of our Power BI reporting capability. We want someone who can combine strong Excel-based financial modelling with practical Power BI development, helping us improve the speed, quality and accessibility of financial and commercial information across the Group.

You will work directly with the Head of Strategic Finance, taking ownership of key areas of Group FP&A and supporting the development of a Junior Analyst.

For the right person, the role offers significant exposure to senior leadership, a wide variety of strategic and commercial work, and the opportunity to shape how finance operates within a growing international business.

Key responsibilities

Financial planning, forecasting and modelling

  • Take ownership of key elements of the Group's budgeting, forecasting and quarterly reforecasting processes, working across multiple business units and international operations.
  • Develop, maintain and improve integrated financial models, predominantly in Excel, covering revenue, profitability, costs, headcount and other financial and operational measures.
  • Analyse financial performance against budgets and forecasts, identifying the underlying drivers of variances and distinguishing between timing differences, structural issues and changes in commercial performance.
  • Develop scenario and sensitivity analyses to support business planning, investment decisions and the assessment of risks and opportunities.
  • Work with business stakeholders to understand and challenge forecast assumptions, ensuring they are commercially grounded and supported by appropriate evidence.
  • Continually identify opportunities to improve the efficiency, accuracy and reliability of our financial planning processes.

Power BI, data analytics and management reporting

  • Play a leading hands-on role in developing, maintaining and improving the Group's Power BI reporting capabilities.
  • Build and enhance dashboards covering financial performance, commercial KPIs, business-unit performance and forward-looking indicators.
  • Work with multiple data sources, using Power Query, data modelling and DAX to develop reliable, scalable and meaningful reporting solutions.
  • Help develop consistent reporting structures, definitions and data models so information can be analysed effectively across business units, regions and reporting periods.
  • Translate complex datasets into clear, accessible visualisations that enable senior stakeholders to identify trends, risks and opportunities.
  • Improve the integration of Excel-based financial models with Power BI and other reporting tools, reducing manual processing and improving reporting efficiency.
  • Take responsibility for validating outputs, maintaining data integrity and ensuring reporting can be reconciled to underlying financial information.

Commercial analysis and business partnering

  • Work closely with business-unit leaders, operational teams and senior management to understand financial performance and support commercial decision-making.
  • Analyse the operational drivers of revenue and profitability, including consultant utilisation, charge-out rates, headcount, grade mix, project delivery, work winning, backlog and pipeline.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial performance, whether through revenue growth, improved utilisation, pricing, cost management or greater operational efficiency.
  • Challenge financial assumptions and business explanations constructively, using data and commercial understanding to establish the underlying causes of performance.
  • Translate analysis into practical recommendations, helping stakeholders understand not only what has happened, but what should happen next.
  • Build strong relationships across the business and develop a reputation as a credible, approachable and commercially valuable finance partner.

Strategic analysis and wider finance development

  • Support the preparation of financial and commercial reporting for the Executive Team, CFO and Board, ensuring information is accurate, concise and focused on the issues that matter.
  • Undertake ad hoc financial and strategic analysis, responding to requests from senior leadership and identifying opportunities proactively.
  • Contribute to acquisition-related work where required, including financial analysis, valuation, forecasting and financial due diligence.
  • Support improvements to the Group's financial systems, reporting processes and use of data.
  • Explore opportunities to use automation, AI and emerging technologies to streamline routine work and improve the quality of analysis.
  • Provide technical support, guidance and review to the Junior Analyst, helping develop their modelling, reporting and analytical capabilities.

Requirements

What we're looking for

We are particularly interested in candidates who combine strong financial fundamentals with analytical curiosity, technical capability and commercial judgement.

This is not a purely traditional accounting role, nor is it a standalone data analyst position. We need someone comfortable working across finance, data, technology and the wider business.

Essential requirements

Financial and commercial capability

  • Relevant experience in FP&A, commercial finance, financial analysis or a closely related role, with evidence of independently delivering meaningful financial analysis.
  • Strong understanding of management reporting, budgeting, forecasting, financial performance and variance analysis.
  • Advanced Excel capability, including experience developing, maintaining and reviewing financial models.
  • Ability to identify the underlying financial and operational drivers of business performance, rather than simply reporting movements against budget.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to identify inconsistencies, investigate discrepancies and challenge assumptions.
  • A relevant degree or equivalent analytical and professional background.
  • Qualified or nearing completion of a recognised professional accountancy qualification such as CIMA, ACA, ACCA or equivalent.

Power BI and data analytics

  • Demonstrable, hands-on Power BI development experience. Candidates must have experience building and maintaining reporting solutions, rather than solely consuming dashboards or creating basic visualisations.
  • Practical experience using Power Query to transform and prepare data, creating relationships within Power BI data models and developing DAX measures.
  • Strong understanding of how to structure, validate and present data to produce accurate, repeatable and useful management information.
  • Ability to work with multiple datasets and reporting sources, identifying data-quality issues and improving the reliability of the resulting analysis.
  • Confidence presenting financial and operational information visually, with a clear understanding of what makes a dashboard useful to its intended audience.

Business partnering and ways of working

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex analysis clearly to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Commercial curiosity and a genuine interest in understanding how businesses operate, generate revenue and improve profitability.
  • A proactive, self-starting approach, taking ownership of work, identifying problems and proposing solutions without relying on detailed instructions.
  • Strong critical thinking and a healthy scepticism towards data, assumptions and conclusions.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, while retaining the ability to step back and understand the wider commercial picture.
  • Confidence engaging with stakeholders, asking questions and constructively challenging explanations where necessary.
  • The ability to prioritise competing demands, work independently and deliver accurate analysis to deadlines.
  • A collaborative and approachable working style, with an interest in supporting and developing less experienced colleagues.

Desirable experience

We would also be interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • FP&A or commercial finance within a consultancy, professional-services business or other project-based organisation.
  • Group-level financial reporting, consolidation or forecasting across multiple business units.
  • Working with international stakeholders, financial data from different jurisdictions or multi-currency reporting.
  • More advanced Power BI development, including complex data models, Fabric, semantic models, data integration and reporting governance.
  • SQL, Python or other data-analysis and automation tools.
  • Experience using AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, Codex or Claude to improve financial analysis, modelling, reporting or process efficiency, with appropriate validation and data controls.
  • Financial systems implementation, reporting transformation or automation projects.
  • Corporate finance, acquisitions, financial due diligence or investment appraisal.
  • Experience coaching junior analysts or reviewing the quality of other team members' work.

What success looks like

We want someone who will quickly become a trusted member of the Strategic Finance team, combining independent technical delivery with strong commercial engagement.

Within the first six to twelve months, we would expect the successful candidate to be:

  • Taking ownership of significant elements of the Group's forecasting, reporting and financial analysis.
  • Confidently developing and improving Excel financial models and Power BI reporting solutions.
  • Building productive relationships with stakeholders across the business and contributing meaningfully to discussions about financial performance.
  • Identifying risks, opportunities and the underlying drivers of commercial performance, supported by robust analysis.
  • Proactively suggesting improvements to reporting, processes and the way the Group uses financial data.
  • Supporting the development of the junior analyst and contributing to the broader capabilities of the Strategic Finance team.
