The posting

Position Title: Healthy Movement Healthy Plate Peer Leader (Volunteer)

Number of Positions Available: 2 (1 – Pickering, 1 – South Oshawa)

Commitment 7-week program, 2-hour session plus additional prep/support time (total 3–4 hours weekly)

Work Location: In Person – Durham Community Health Centre (Pickering and South Oshawa sites).

Organization

Durham Community Health Centre (DCHC) is a registered, charitable organization that provides integrated, accessible, and equitable community-based primary care, wellness services, and health education to Durham community members who face multiple barriers to their health and well-being.

DCHC also provides equity-based programs and services that focus on priority populations such as Indigenous, Black, the 2SLGBTQI Community, Newcomers to Canada, Seniors, and Unattached patients (i.e., those without a family doctor), to name a few. DCHC ensures Durham community members receive not only sick care, but preventive care as well.

At DCHC, we are a team-based interprofessional group of staff including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, counselors, dietitians, outreach workers, medical secretaries, and other administrative staff. We always place every client at the Centre of our approach to care, based on their needs. We address these needs through integrated clinical and wellness care and health education.

Position Overview:

We are seeking dependable volunteers to support the Healthy Movement Healthy Plate program. This role focuses on assisting with program preparation, including organizing materials and supporting weekly sessions that promote healthy eating and active living.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and package weekly program materials
  • Measure and organize ingredient hampers
  • Support program setup and coordination
  • Assist team members during sessions
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace
  • Engage with participants during warm-up activities
  • Support participants in connecting with each other to build a sense of community
  • Lead icebreaker activities
  • Provide support to participants who may require assistance during exercise sessions

Qualifications

  • Lived experience with Type 2 Diabetes and prior participation in a Diabetes Education Program (DEP)
  • Ability to lift and carry groceries
  • Ability to stand for 1–2 hours
  • Comfortable working in a team environment
  • Basic math skills (measuring and portioning)
  • Food Safety certification (or willingness to obtain)

Time Commitment:

  • Weekly sessions: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
  • Duration: 7 weeks

Full vaccination against COVID-19 is mandatory for this position (DCHC will however adhere to its duty to accommodate those who are unable to be fully vaccinated for a reason related to a human right protected ground).
