POSITION DESCRIPTION

EIP is seeking an experienced Senior Energy Engineer to support commercial new construction and major renovation energy efficiency programs. In this role, you will work with building owners, developers, architects, engineers, contractors, utility clients, and program teams during the design and preconstruction process to identify opportunities to improve building energy performance before construction.

The Senior Energy Engineer will develop and review whole-building energy models, establish baseline and proposed building performance, evaluate alternative building designs and energy efficiency measures, and quantify expected energy, demand, utility cost, and economic savings. The role requires the ability to translate modeling results into practical recommendations that can be incorporated into building designs while there is still an opportunity to influence equipment, systems, controls, envelope, and other design decisions.

The ideal candidate combines advanced building energy modeling capability with strong engineering judgment and consultative skills. This individual should be able to understand a developing building design, identify technically feasible efficiency opportunities, model alternatives and interactive effects, and clearly communicate the energy and financial value of recommended improvements to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Objectives of this Role

  • Whole-Building Energy Modeling: Develop accurate energy models for commercial new construction and major renovation projects using architectural and engineering design documents and appropriate modeling methodologies.
  • Design Optimization: Identify and evaluate energy efficiency opportunities during design and preconstruction, when recommendations can be incorporated into the final building design.
  • Energy and Cost Savings Analysis: Quantify annual energy savings, peak demand reductions, utility cost savings, incremental costs, payback, and other economic impacts associated with proposed efficiency improvements.
  • Baseline and Proposed Performance: Establish appropriate baseline and proposed building conditions in accordance with applicable energy codes, standards, utility program requirements, and modeling protocols.
  • Design Team Collaboration: Work consultatively with owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and program teams to evaluate alternatives and support adoption of cost-effective efficiency recommendations.
  • Technical Quality: Ensure models, assumptions, calculations, documentation, and recommendations are technically sound, transparent, reproducible, and consistent with program requirements.
  • Program Performance: Support utility and government-sponsored new construction programs in achieving energy savings, demand reduction, decarbonization, and customer participation objectives.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

  • Develop Whole-Building Energy Models: Build and maintain detailed energy models for commercial new construction and major renovation projects using EnergyPlus/OpenStudio, IES VE, eQUEST, Trane TRACE 3D Plus, or comparable tools.
  • Review Design Documents: Read and interpret architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, and envelope drawings, specifications, schedules, narratives, and other design documentation at multiple stages of design.
  • Establish Baseline and Proposed Conditions: Develop appropriate baseline and proposed models using applicable energy codes, ASHRAE standards, utility program rules, and project-specific requirements.
  • Identify Energy Efficiency Opportunities: Evaluate HVAC systems, central plants, heat pumps, heat recovery, controls, building envelope, lighting and lighting controls, domestic hot water, ventilation, plug/process loads, and other building systems for efficiency opportunities.
  • Model Design Alternatives: Perform iterative modeling of individual measures and packages of measures, including interactive effects, to determine the impact of alternative building designs.
  • Quantify Energy and Financial Impacts: Calculate annual electricity and fuel savings, peak demand reductions, utility cost savings, incremental costs, simple payback, and other economic metrics used to support design decisions and program participation.
  • Develop Recommendations: Translate modeling results into practical, technically feasible energy efficiency recommendations appropriate to the project's design stage, operating requirements, budget, and performance objectives.
  • Collaborate with Design Teams: Participate in meetings and technical discussions with owners, developers, architects, MEP engineers, contractors, utility representatives, and program staff to explain findings and support incorporation of recommended measures.
  • Perform Model Quality Reviews: Review model inputs, schedules, assumptions, system configurations, outputs, and results for reasonableness and consistency; troubleshoot discrepancies and document modeling methodologies.
  • Support Utility Program Requirements: Prepare calculations and documentation needed to establish eligible savings, incremental costs, incentive calculations, and compliance with applicable new construction program requirements.
  • Evaluate Electrification and Decarbonization Strategies: Analyze high-efficiency heat pumps, heat recovery, all-electric designs, advanced controls, high-performance envelopes, and other strategies that reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Prepare Technical Deliverables: Develop energy modeling reports, savings analyses, technical memoranda, presentations, recommendation summaries, and supporting documentation for clients and program stakeholders.
  • Support Program Improvement: Apply lessons from completed projects to improve modeling approaches, technical tools, design recommendations, program processes, and customer outcomes.

Required Qualifications
