We are looking for a skilled Senior Backend Engineer to design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend systems. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in Backend Engineering, with experience building robust APIs, designing efficient databases, optimizing application performance, and developing secure, maintainable services.

In this role, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including frontend engineers, product managers, DevOps engineers, and data teams, to deliver high-quality software solutions. You will take ownership of backend architecture, technical implementation, and system reliability while contributing to engineering best practices and long-term technology strategy.

Candidates with additional experience in Distributed Systems, Data Engineering, and Platform Engineering will be preferred, particularly those who have worked on large-scale applications, cloud-native infrastructure, and complex data-intensive systems.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

1. Backend Development and Architecture

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend applications and services.
  • Build secure, reliable, and high-performance RESTful APIs and, where appropriate, GraphQL services.
  • Develop modular, maintainable, and reusable code following established software engineering principles.
  • Make architectural decisions that support scalability, reliability, and long-term product growth.
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, production issues, and technical debt.

2. Database Management and Optimization

  • Design and optimize database schemas, queries, indexes, and data access patterns.
  • Work with relational and NoSQL databases to support application requirements.
  • Ensure data integrity, consistency, availability, and efficient storage.
  • Implement caching strategies and other performance optimization techniques.

3. System Reliability and Scalability

  • Develop backend systems capable of handling increasing traffic and growing data volumes.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, error handling, and fault-tolerance mechanisms.
  • Participate in code reviews, automated testing, debugging, and production deployments.
  • Collaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams to improve deployment workflows and system observability.

4. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with product and engineering teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to coding standards, documentation, and engineering practices.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to existing systems.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Must-have: Strong experience in Backend Engineering, including application development, API design, system architecture, and performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in one or more backend programming languages, such as Python, Java, Go, Node.js, or similar technologies.
  • Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, and software design principles.
  • Experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases, caching systems, and API integrations.
  • Familiarity with version control, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and production debugging.
  • Understanding of application security, authentication, authorization, and secure coding practices.

Good-to-Have Skills

  • Distributed Systems: Experience with microservices, message queues, event-driven architectures, concurrency, and fault-tolerant systems.
  • Data Engineering: Familiarity with data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, streaming systems, and large-scale data processing.
  • Platform Engineering: Experience with cloud platforms, containerization, Kubernetes, infrastructure automation, and developer platforms.
  • Exposure to AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform is an advantage.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a proactive problem-solver with strong analytical skills, sound engineering judgment, and a commitment to building dependable software. They should be comfortable taking ownership of complex technical challenges, collaborating across teams, and improving system performance, scalability, and maintainability.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
