About weSure

At weSure, we're reimagining small business insurance by making commercial coverage simpler, more accessible, and more transparent.

Our digital-first platform combines technology, data, and advanced underwriting to make it easier for small business owners and agents to get the coverage they need. We focus on the unique needs of small businesses across industries including restaurants, retail, professional services, contractors, real estate, healthcare, and more.

As we continue to grow, we're looking for an experienced Senior BOP Underwriter to help us build and manage a profitable commercial insurance portfolio.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly experienced Business Owners Policy (BOP) Underwriter with a strong background in commercial lines and small business insurance.

This is a senior-level role for an underwriting professional who can independently evaluate risks, make sound underwriting decisions, structure coverage, develop pricing, and manage a profitable book of business.

The ideal candidate combines deep BOP underwriting expertise with strong analytical judgment, commercial awareness, and the ability to work effectively with agents and brokers.

You will also have the opportunity to contribute to underwriting strategy and help shape processes in a technology-driven insurance environment.

What You'll Do

Underwriting & Risk Selection

  • Evaluate BOP and small commercial submissions across a broad range of industries.
  • Analyze applications, loss runs, financial information, inspections, and supplemental underwriting documentation.
  • Assess property, general liability, business income, equipment breakdown, cyber, crime, and other commercial exposures.
  • Evaluate catastrophe exposures, including wind, hail, flood, wildfire, and earthquake.
  • Determine account eligibility based on underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and portfolio objectives.
  • Identify adverse selection, emerging risks, and trends that may impact profitability.

Pricing & Coverage

  • Develop appropriate pricing based on risk characteristics, loss experience, and market conditions.
  • Determine premiums, deductibles, limits, endorsements, and exclusions.
  • Review replacement cost valuations and business income calculations.
  • Apply sound underwriting judgment while balancing growth and profitability.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions with agents and brokers.

Portfolio Management

  • Manage and maintain a profitable book of commercial business.
  • Monitor loss ratios, retention, growth, and agency performance.
  • Conduct renewal reviews and identify opportunities for account expansion.
  • Identify underperforming segments and recommend corrective actions.
  • Contribute to strategies that support profitable premium growth.

Agency & Broker Relationships

  • Build strong relationships with independent agents, brokers, and key producers.
  • Provide underwriting guidance and product expertise.
  • Help agents structure accounts appropriately and improve submission quality.
  • Participate in agency meetings and business planning discussions.
  • Serve as a trusted underwriting resource for agency partners.

Strategy & Leadership

  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor to junior underwriting professionals.
  • Contribute to underwriting strategy, product development, and portfolio initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve underwriting processes and decision-making.
  • Stay current on commercial insurance trends, regulatory developments, and emerging risks.
  • Support quality assurance, compliance, and underwriting governance.

What Success Looks Like

In this role, you will:

  • Drive profitable growth within your assigned book and territory.
  • Maintain targeted loss ratios and retention levels.
  • Deliver timely and accurate underwriting decisions.
  • Strengthen agency relationships and improve submission quality.
  • Identify emerging risks and recommend appropriate underwriting actions.
  • Contribute to underwriting strategy and process improvement.
  • Become a trusted technical resource for the underwriting team.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of commercial lines underwriting experience.
  • 7+ years of hands-on BOP underwriting experience.
  • Proven experience managing a profitable commercial book of business.
  • Strong background in small commercial insurance and/or middle-market risks.
  • Experience working directly with independent agents and wholesale brokers.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial property and liability coverages.
  • Excellent risk selection and underwriting judgment.
  • Strong analytical and financial assessment skills.
  • Ability to independently make and defend underwriting decisions.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-management skills.

Technical Expertise

Experience with:

  • Business Owners Policies (BOP)
  • Commercial General Liability (CGL)
  • Commercial Property
  • Business Income & Extra Expense
  • Equipment Breakdown
  • Cyber Liability
  • Crime Coverage

  • EPLI
  • Hired & Non-Owned Auto
  • Umbrella / Excess Liability
  • ISO forms and rating methodologies
  • Commercial underwriting and policy administration systems
  • Risk modeling and predictive analytics
  • Microsoft Excel and other analytical tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • CPCU, AU, CIC, ARM, or another relevant insurance designation.
  • Experience with portfolio optimization, book roll analysis, and renewal strategies.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
