Job Description

As an experienced Functional Safety Consultant, you will lead and deliver a diverse range of high-profile projects-from small scoping and feasibility studies for site upgrades to complex process designs across Civil Nuclear, Defence Facilities and Energy Storage Systems.

You will manage multidisciplinary engineering interfaces, deliver control and safety system designs, and lead technical project teams to ensure safety-critical standards are achieved safely, efficiently and to the required quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project & Technical: Lead projects through the full lifecycle-from concept design to commissioning-managing project teams, timelines, and budgets.
  • Control & Instrumentation: Lead or support the specification, design and assessment of control, instrumentation and safety systems within safety-critical environments.
  • Innovation & Delivery: Drive innovation projects, transitioning new systems and technologies from early concept through to formal acceptance.
  • Documentation & Verification: Produce, review, verify and approve technical reports, specifications and detailed engineering design documentation.
  • Client Engagement: Manage client relationships to define requirements, negotiate technical scope, manage project risks, and deliver progress reporting.

Requirements

Essential Requirements

  • MEng in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Control & Instrumentation Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related discipline(or equivalent experience/qualification).
  • Strong practical knowledge of process control systems alongside deep familiarity with EC&I documentation (SLDs, P&IDs, BCDs, schematics).
  • Experience applying hazard analysis and risk assessment techniques, including HAZOP, LOPA, SIL determination, FMEA, FTA and related safety assessment methods.
  • Demonstrable experience leading safety-critical solutions aligned with standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 61511, ISO 13849, DO-178, or DO-254.
  • Experience working under ISO 9001 quality standards, paired with exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience delivering work within regulated or safety-critical sectors.
  • Strong client-facing and report-writing skills.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience within the Nuclear sector.
  • Formal Functional Safety accreditation (e.g. TÜV Functional Safety Engineer).
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards chartership.
  • Familiarity with software development lifecycles and software languages (e.g. C/C++).
  • Familiarity with change control and defect tracking processes.
  • SC and / or DV security clearance.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Functional Safety Consultant to join a growing consultancy and play a key role in delivering complex, safety-critical projects across regulated industries. If you are looking for greater responsibility, technical challenge and the opportunity to help shape a growing business, we'd love to hear from you.

Due to the nature of the work that the Occam Group undertake, you must be a UK national in order to apply. You will be required to undergo pre-employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
