Staff Accountant

Salary: $80,000 - $100,000/year
Our client is seeking a hands-on Staff Accountant to manage a broad range of accounting, financial reporting, government-contract accounting, and administrative responsibilities within a growing small business.
The Staff Accountant will support the full accounting cycle, including financial statement preparation, account reconciliations, budgeting and forecasting, accounts payable and receivable, journal entries, audit support, tax preparation, and detailed financial analysis. The position will also play an important role in maintaining accounting practices and supporting documentation appropriate for MPI's government contracts.
This position is well suited for a versatile accounting professional who enjoys working independently, digging into financial details, solving problems, and taking responsibility across multiple areas of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate accounting records and support monthly and year-end closing activities.
- Prepare and analyze income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and supporting schedules.
- Perform bank, credit card, balance sheet, and general ledger reconciliations.
- Prepare and post journal entries and maintain complete supporting documentation and workpapers.
- Manage and support accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, collections, and expense reporting.
- Prepare budgets, forecasts, cash flow analyses, and management financial reports.
- Develop detailed financial analyses, schedules, workpapers, and analytical reports using Excel.
- Investigate account discrepancies and unusual transactions and perform detailed financial research as necessary.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; MBA, Master's degree, or CPA track a plus.
- Minimum 4 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Public accounting experience is strongly preferred; forensic accounting experience is a plus.
- Experience preparing and analyzing financial statements and managing small- to mid-sized accounting engagements or comparable responsibilities.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, general ledger accounting, account reconciliation, financial reporting, and financial analysis.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with accounting software.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and assume a broad range of responsibilities within a small organization.
- Direct government-contract accounting experience is desirable; however, candidates with strong fundamentals and demonstrated ability to learn and apply detailed regulatory requirements will also be considered.
Government Accounting Experience:
Experience with government contract accounting is strongly preferred, particularly familiarity with:
- Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) cost principles
- DCAA accounting-system and audit expectations
- Direct versus indirect cost classification
- Indirect cost pools, allocation bases, and indirect rates
- Allowable and unallowable costs
- Labor charging and timekeeping requirements
- Contract and project-level cost accounting
- Government-contract documentation and audit support
