Company Description
Zayo provides mission-critical bandwidth to the world’s most impactful companies, fueling the innovations that are transforming our society. Zayo’s 141,000-mile network in North America and Europe includes extensive metro connectivity to thousands of buildings and data centers. Zayo’s communications infrastructure solutions include dark fiber, private data networks, wavelengths, Ethernet, and dedicated Internet access. Zayo serves wireless and wireline carriers, media, tech, content, finance, healthcare and other large enterprises.
Zayo is seeking a Data Center Engineer. The Data Center Engineer is the engineering tier of the Data Center Operations team, and the technical owner of fiber and connectivity for our Los Angeles data centers and POPs. This role owns connectivity requests and fiber projects end to end — from feasibility and design through provisioning, turn-up, and close-out. Working with Fiber Engineering and other specialist teams, the Data Center Engineer owns dark-fiber and cross-connect provisioning, splice and panel assignments, circuit turn-up, and fiber records and capacity. Where technicians execute the day-to-day, the Data Center Engineer works at the system level, owning root cause and prevention. While fiber and connectivity are core to the role, the Data Center Engineer maintains a working command of the full data center system—power, cooling, space, and remote hands—and integrates them rather than specializing in only one.
The Data Center Engineer reports to the Data Center Manager and works closely with the Manager to translate operational priorities, customer requirements, and connectivity needs into technically sound execution.
Work Authorization Requirement: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored work authorization, such as OPT, TN, H1B or any other type of work visa, now or in the future.
Responsibilities
- Analyzes service orders to determine appropriate circuit design.
- Design, simulate, and validate electronic circuits that meet functional, performance, and safety requirements.
- Designs and prepares detailed circuit layout records for end-to-end circuit delivery and interfaces with other internal departments to ensure coordination of all elements required for provisioning of service.
- Ensure network management and utilization requirements for all transmission equipment are being met.
- Generate schematics, collaborate with layout engineers, and review layouts for signal integrity, power integrity, and manufacturability.
- Perform and interpret advanced fiber testing and certification — OTDR (bidirectional, trace analysis), light-level/dBm, insertion loss and reflectance, and fiber characterization on diverse routes; scope and clean, and support field splicers.
- Own the fiber records and capacity picture — span-ID and fiber-record ownership, fiber-path documentation, fiber-count and utilization forecasting, and conduit pathway documentation (MPOE, risers, closets, panels) — working in circuit-record and provisioning systems.
- Maintain and improve fiber-provisioning SOPs, workflows, and close-out standards
- Work closely and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams (system engineers, firmware/software developers, manufacturing, and quality assurance) to deliver complete solutions.
- Maintain facility inventory systems to ensure accurate and complete facility assignments.
- Identify and notify Engineering/Planning department of network congestion
- Provide engineering-quality remote/smart hands — server support and turn-up, optic and NIC installation, patching, and cable tracing — and load, install, and commission new equipment.
- Stay grounded in critical infrastructure — power (A/B feeds, PDU, UPS), cooling (CRAC/HVAC), and space/capacity — respond to and triage facility alarms, support preventive maintenance and MOP execution in maintenance windows, and engage Facilities and specialist teams for deep faults.
- Serve as an engineering escalation point for the technician team, participate in change management and maintenance windows, and mentor technicians.
- Communicate with customers on connectivity requests and turn-ups.
- Provides best practice and skilled expertise to internal departments.
- Provides technical support and interpretation for complex problems based on analysis as requested.
- Assists the Engineers in the development and revision of internal procedures related to the processing and publication of CLRs
- Resource for lower-level designers and technicians
