About the Role

As a Machine Operator at Atlas Tube, a division of Zekelman Industries, Birmingham, AL, you will play a key role in setting up and operating high-speed production equipment with robotic elements to form or cut steel to specified dimensions and specifications. This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, advanced setup and calibration skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and quality, and offers the opportunity to contribute directly to efficient, high-quality production performance.

You will collaborate with the Plant Manager, Production Supervisors, Quality, and Maintenance teams to keep equipment running safely, minimize scrap and downtime, and support continuous improvement. This is a full-time onsite role located in Birmingham, AL.

This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, enjoys hands-on technical work, and takes pride in precision and safety.

What You’ll Do

  • Observe all safety and LOTO rules to operate equipment efficiently and effectively.
  • Perform advanced setup and calibration of production equipment to meet specifications.
  • Inspect materials for quality issues before, during, and after production runs.
  • Record and report quality deficiencies to supervisors and the Quality department.
  • Maintain tooling and job-specific tools required for production completion.
  • Diagnose equipment and quality problems while minimizing scrap and delays.
  • Complete production, changeover, and scrap reporting accurately and on time.
  • Assist Maintenance with repairs and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Participate in continuous improvement programs to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas through routine housekeeping.
  • Maintain regular, full-time predictable onsite attendance per the posted schedule as an essential function of the role.
  • Lead and promote healthy and safe work practices as required by regulatory agencies and Company policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Who You Are

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to read and write English and maintain accurate production records and logs.
  • Manufacturing or related industrial experience preferred.
  • Ability to perform basic math including addition, subtraction, decimals, and fractions.
  • Experience using measuring devices such as tape measures, micrometers, and calipers.
  • Ability to operate forklifts, cranes, and other equipment required for the role.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot independently.
  • Detail-oriented and capable of working with minimal supervision.

Physical Abilities

  • Ability to move objects and perform continuous movement using limbs with manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for several hours at a time.
  • Ability to lift, climb, bend, stoop, push, and pull throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
  • Ability to stand and work on feet for 10–12 hours during the shift.
  • Ability to perform work in a plant/manufacturing environment.
  • Other physical requirements as needed for the job.
