The posting

There are over 50,000 water utilities in the U.S.—but unlike large metro areas like San Francisco or Seattle, most rely on outdated, inflexible billing systems. For their customers, this means confusing bills and frustrating payment experiences. For the utilities, it means wasted time, manual processes, and limited insight.

At Current, we’re building the modern, intuitive billing platform that these utilities—and their communities—deserve. Join us to help reimagine how people interact with essential services like water, gas, and electricity, and empower utilities to operate more efficiently, transparently, and sustainably.

Mission

We’re on a mission to help utilities thrive in the face of aging infrastructure, regulatory pressure, and rising customer expectations.

Current empowers utilities with:

  • A modern billing engine that automates complex workflows
  • Real-time analytics for operational and financial insight
  • Self-serve tools that give end users more transparency and control

By saving time and money on back-office tasks, our platform helps utilities focus on what matters: investing in infrastructure, service quality, and the environment.

Software Engineer at Current

As a Software Engineer, you’ll work side by side with the cofounders to build an engineering team and culture that will tackle some of the biggest challenges facing utilities today.

You will build an intuitive UX/UI, a scalable billing engine, dashboarding capabilities, and integrations with other key systems like meters and payment providers to streamline internal processes.

What We’re Looking For

  1. Full-stack product engineer – You’re equally comfortable fine-tuning a SQL query as designing a clean, intuitive React component.
  2. Builder mindset – You thrive in ambiguity, learn quickly, and can take an idea from concept to production with minimal guidance.
  3. Customer-oriented – You think beyond features and build with real users in mind.
  4. Experience – 2+ years of engineering experience building production-grade products. You’ve shipped things that people use.
  5. Fast Learner – You quickly adapt to new technologies and concepts, with the ability to rapidly master unfamiliar tools and frameworks.

Tech stack familiarity – Strong experience with TypeScript, React, and Node.js. Bonus if you’ve worked with Next.js, Vercel, PostgreSQL, Stripe/Finix, Twilio, or AWS/GCP.

What You’ll Be Doing

  1. Build and ship a performant, secure, and user-friendly web application
  2. Contribute to architectural decisions and shape core systems (billing, payments, APIs, integrations, etc.)
  3. Design and implement AI-powered workflows to enhance billing automation, predictive analytics, and customer service capabilities
  4. Collaborate directly with customers and co-founders to shape the roadmap
  5. Continuously raise the bar for code quality, security, and performance

Help define engineering best practices and mentor future teammates

What’s In It For You

  1. True ownership – Equity and influence in a high-growth, VC-backed startup
  2. Big impact – See your work go live, get used, and make a real difference
  3. Startup visibility – Work side-by-side with experienced founders and learn how to build a business
  4. Great culture – We care about craftsmanship, autonomy, and continuous improvement
  5. Competitive compensation – $120K–$150K base + meaningful equity
  6. Generous benefits – Medical, dental, vision, and unlimited PTO
  1. If you’re entrepreneurial at heart and want to help define the future of essential infrastructure, we’d love to talk.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
