About Us

The N.C. Office of the Commissioner of Banks (NCCOB) is responsible for the chartering and regulation of North Carolina's state banks, trust companies, mortgage companies, as well as registration and licensing of various financial institutions operating in North Carolina. Our mission is to promote and maintain the strength and fairness of the North Carolina financial services marketplace through the supervision and regulation of financial service providers in that marketplace.

Description of Work

This posting is for a journey level (mid-level) examiner. If journey level applications are not received, contributing level (entry-level) applicants may be considered.

NCCOB seeks a journey-level Financial Examiner for its Mortgage Division. The role focuses on mortgage origination and includes reviewing lender and broker operations for compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Examiners analyze information, communicate findings, prepare reports, recommend corrective actions, and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders. They may testify at hearings and must protect confidential information. Working independently or on a team, examiners exercise sound judgment, adapt to changing circumstances, present findings, and provide training when assigned. Recruitment range: $43,929 (min) - $79,000 (max)

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Demonstrates professional level working knowledge of: state and federal statutes, regulations, rules, and procedures applicable to the mortgage origination industry (TILA, SAFE, RESPA).
  • Working knowledge of mortgage origination industry, investor standards, and best practices.
  • Industry knowledge of lending quality control and compliance processes.
  • Candidate must have knowledge and ability to use applicable information technology to meet work needs, including proficient knowledge with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Performance abilities include but are not limited to objectivity, time management, integrity, attention to detail, teamwork, professionalism, initiative, and organizational sensitivity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required to be successful.
  • Experience in writing reports is recommended.

WORK ENVIRONMENT INVOLVES OVER 50% OVERNIGHT TRAVEL Examiners may reside anywhere in the state of North Carolina. Examiners work a compressed work schedule, with every Friday off.

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in a related field (mortgage, banking, finance, business) AND a minimum of one (1) or more years of recent experience in one or more of the following mortgage areas: regulatory compliance, investor relations, underwriting, or processing; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Hiring Range for this position is $43,929-$65,000

Journey-level hire:

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in a related field (mortgage, banking, finance, business) AND a minimum of five (5) or more years of recent experience in one or more of the following mortgage areas: regulatory compliance, investor relations, underwriting, or processing; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Hiring Range for this position is $43,929-$79,000
