Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated and relationship-driven Binding Authority Renewal Underwriter to join our Commercial Binding Authority team. This role is responsible for managing and underwriting a profitable renewal portfolio while building strong relationships with agency partners, brokers, and carrier markets.

The Renewal Underwriter will evaluate risks, analyze exposures, assess pricing and coverage adequacy, and make underwriting decisions within established binding authority guidelines. This position plays a critical role in maintaining account retention, driving portfolio profitability, and delivering exceptional service to trading partners.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong underwriting foundation, an analytical mindset, and a relationship-focused approach to managing business within a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Job Responsibilities

Renewal Underwriting & Portfolio Management

  • Underwrite and manage a portfolio of Commercial Binding Authority renewal business with a focus on profitability, retention, and long-term growth.
  • Analyze submissions, loss history, exposures, account performance, and underwriting data to evaluate risk acceptability.
  • Review coverage needs, pricing adequacy, and underwriting characteristics in accordance with carrier and binding authority guidelines.
  • Research and apply appropriate rates, coverages, forms, and underwriting requirements.
  • Evaluate complex risks and make underwriting decisions within assigned authority levels.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and identify trends impacting profitability, retention, and underwriting results.
  • Develop and execute renewal strategies that support account retention while maintaining underwriting discipline.

Agency & Broker Relationship Management

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with retail agents, brokers, carrier partners, and key production sources throughout the Southeast region.
  • Serve as a trusted underwriting resource by providing responsive service, coverage guidance, and underwriting expertise.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions, pricing rationale, renewal strategies, and coverage recommendations effectively.
  • Participate in agency meetings and relationship-building activities to strengthen partnerships and support business growth.
  • Deliver an exceptional customer experience while maintaining sound underwriting practices.

Policy Administration & Operational Excellence

  • Coordinate the quoting, binding, issuance, endorsement, and renewal processes.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting documentation in accordance with company, carrier, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Process cancellations, non-renewals, reinstatements, and other policy transactions as required.
  • Ensure underwriting files are complete, organized, and compliant with internal standards.
  • Collaborate with underwriting, operations, brokerage, and carrier teams to ensure efficient account handling and service delivery.

Analysis & Business Support

  • Analyze portfolio quality, retention, and profitability trends.
  • Prepare reports and provide underwriting insights to support business decisions and portfolio management strategies.
  • Assist with special underwriting projects, process improvements, and business initiatives.
  • Maintain awareness of market conditions, carrier appetites, underwriting trends, and competitive developments within the Commercial Binding Authority marketplace.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience will be considered.
  • 1+ years of experience in commercial insurance, including experience within: Binding Authority Commercial Underwriting Wholesale Brokerage Retail Agency Operations Insurance Carrier Underwriting MGA/MGU environments Account Management Commercial Lines Insurance
  • Knowledge of commercial insurance principles, underwriting concepts, and risk evaluation practices.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level of comfort communicating by phone and participating in virtual or in-person meetings with agents, brokers, and business partners.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Property & Casualty License or willingness to obtain within 45 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience underwriting Commercial Binding Authority business.
  • Wholesale brokerage, MGA, MGU, or carrier underwriting experience.
  • Familiarity with the Southeast insurance marketplace.
  • Experience managing renewal accounts and driving retention strategies.
  • Exposure to commercial Property & Casualty insurance coverages.
  • Associate in Insurance Services (AIS), CPCU, CIC, ARM, or other relevant insurance designations.
  • Experience building and maintaining agency or broker relationships.

The target salary range for this position is $64,000.00 - $80,000.00 annually.

The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
