The posting

We are sharing a specialised remote consulting opportunity for experienced Medical Coders with expertise in inpatient coding, ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS classification, MS-DRG assignment, clinical documentation review, and medical data quality assurance to contribute their professional knowledge to advanced AI training and evaluation initiatives.

Selected professionals will review and annotate inpatient medical records, validate diagnostic and procedural coding, and evaluate the accuracy of clinical documentation and coding-related data. The work combines practical inpatient coding experience with structured medical record analysis, coding guideline interpretation, and quality assurance to improve how advanced AI systems interpret clinical information and apply medical coding standards. Prior experience with AI training projects is not required.

Key Responsibilities

Inpatient Medical Record Review & Annotation

  • Review inpatient medical records, including admission notes, progress notes, consultation reports, and discharge summaries.
  • Analyse operative reports, laboratory results, imaging findings, and other clinical documentation relevant to coding.
  • Annotate medical records using appropriate diagnostic and procedural coding classifications.
  • Identify incomplete, ambiguous, or inconsistent clinical information affecting coding accuracy.
  • Ensure coding annotations accurately reflect documented clinical conditions, procedures, and patient encounters.

ICD-10-CM & ICD-10-PCS Code Assignment

  • Assign and validate ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and ICD-10-PCS inpatient procedure codes.
  • Identify principal and secondary diagnoses based on applicable inpatient coding guidelines.
  • Evaluate diagnosis sequencing and code selection for accuracy and compliance with established conventions.
  • Apply appropriate Present on Admission (POA) indicators to relevant diagnoses.
  • Review complex coding scenarios and identify discrepancies between clinical documentation and assigned codes.

MS-DRG Validation & Inpatient Classification

  • Evaluate MS-DRG assignments and verify consistency with documented diagnoses and procedures.
  • Identify relevant complications and comorbidities (CCs) and major complications and comorbidities (MCCs).
  • Review coding decisions that influence inpatient classification and diagnosis-related group assignment.
  • Assess hospital-acquired conditions (HACs) and relevant patient safety indicators.
  • Apply established inpatient classification methodologies to support accurate medical data evaluation.

Coding Guidelines & Clinical Quality Evaluation

  • Apply UHDDS definitions and the ICD-10-CM/PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.
  • Interpret relevant AHA Coding Clinic guidance when evaluating complex inpatient coding scenarios.
  • Identify coding inconsistencies, guideline misapplications, and documentation-related classification errors.
  • Review coding-related AI training data for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with applicable standards.
  • Provide expert recommendations to improve coding reliability and the quality of medical record annotations.

Technical Feedback & Data Quality Assurance

  • Prepare structured written feedback explaining coding discrepancies and recommended corrections.
  • Communicate complex coding decisions and documentation requirements clearly to project stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with technical and operational teams to resolve coding ambiguities and clarify evaluation requirements.
  • Contribute professional insights to improve medical coding workflows and AI evaluation methodologies.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, data integrity, and documentation quality across assigned deliverables.

Ideal Profile

  • Active AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or AAPC Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) credential.
  • Strong professional experience in inpatient medical coding and clinical documentation review.
  • Advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding and ICD-10-PCS procedure coding.
  • Demonstrated expertise in MS-DRG assignment and inpatient classification methodology.
  • Practical experience identifying principal and secondary diagnoses and applying diagnosis sequencing rules.
  • Strong understanding of Present on Admission (POA) indicators.
  • Familiarity with CC/MCC identification and its application to MS-DRG validation.
  • Working knowledge of UHDDS definitions and inpatient coding conventions.
  • Experience interpreting the ICD-10-CM/PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.
  • Familiarity with AHA Coding Clinic guidance and complex coding interpretations.
  • Understanding of hospital-acquired conditions and relevant patient safety indicators.
  • Experience reviewing admission documentation, operative reports, consultation notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Strong ability to identify documentation inconsistencies and resolve complex coding questions.
  • Experience with acute care inpatient coding or teaching hospital environments is particularly relevant.
  • Exposure to specialty inpatient coding, including surgical, trauma, oncology, cardiology, or transplant cases, is advantageous.
  • Experience conducting coding audits, medical record reviews, or data quality assessments.
  • Access to current ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code sets, Official Coding Guidelines, and MS-DRG grouper tools.
  • Strong analytical reasoning, coding accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for explaining coding decisions and technical findings.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with clinical, coding, and technical project stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to work independently on complex coding assignments.
  • Prior experience with AI model training or evaluation projects is not required.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
