The posting

Amazon Web Services is establishing a hardware engineering office in Portland, Oregon to accelerate server hardware development, manufacturing, and operations. The Portland site will become a center of excellence for electrical hardware engineering within AWS for board development, server power, system performance, silicon quality, and manufacturing. This is a greenfield site leadership role. The site leader will be the first hire and the single most important investment in the success of this office. You will not simply manage a team. You will own the culture, operational posture, recruiting velocity, and engineering output of the entire Portland site from day one.

As the site leader, you will own the Portland office end to end. You will define the site's identity, set its operational cadence, and establish the cultural foundation before the organization scales. You will drive recruiting velocity across all Portland teams, partner with real estate and facilities to stand up lab-capable office space, and represent the Portland site in cross-site planning with Seattle, San Jose, and other AWS engineering locations. You will be the single point of accountability for the site's hiring trajectory, engineering output, and organizational health. Every team at the Portland site, whether in your direct reporting line or not, will look to you as the senior leader on the ground.

As the functional engineering leader, you will hire, develop, and lead the managers who run each of the Portland engineering teams. Your direct reports will be the engineering managers who own board development, server power, and manufacturing test/quality, and validation of 3rd party silicon. You will be accountable for the output, hiring velocity, and technical judgment of each of those teams through the managers you put in place. You will lead board development managers, server power managers, electrical manufacturing test/quality, silicon qualification, and production yield. These are not adjacent teams doing similar work. You will be expected to set technical direction across all of them, make resourcing tradeoffs between them, calibrate talent across teams, and hold each manager and their team to a unified engineering bar. You will also carry coordination responsibility for firmware disciplines co-located at the site, including BIOS, BMC, and mechanical engineering teams.

Key job responsibilities The site leader owns all Portland site operations end to end. This includes defining and executing the recruiting strategy to hire and scale multiple engineering teams. You will lead the multiple engineer teams. You will establish and maintain Amazon's cultural standards at the site, operational rigor, and embody Amazon culture to scale the site.

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline - 10 or more years of progressive experience in hardware engineering, including at least 5 years managing managers - Demonstrated track record of building and scaling hardware engineering teams from the ground up, ideally in a greenfield or early-stage site context - Deep technical fluency across at least two of the following areas: board-level electrical design, server power delivery, manufacturing test engineering, or silicon validation - Proven ability to hire senior technical talent in competitive markets and to establish a high-performance engineering culture that attracts and retains strong builders

- Master's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field - Deep connections with the Portland metro technology labor market, including the semiconductor and hardware engineering ecosystem - Prior experience standing up electrical labs, including board bring-up environments, manufacturing test infrastructure, and silicon debug facilities - Prior experience building culture in a new site, team, or organization - Experience managing organizations that span electrical hardware, power delivery, and silicon validation, manufacturing disciplines under a single leadership structure

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
