Position Summary
The Cloud Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operations of virtualized servers and containerized workloads hosted across AWS, Azure, and VMware environments. This role supports infrastructure maintenance, proactive monitoring, and incident resolution, ensuring the stability, performance, and security of hybrid cloud and on-premises systems. The engineer works closely with the broader infrastructure and engineering teams to maintain healthy fleets, respond to operational issues, and continuously improve the reliability of the platforms they support. Work hours will be 11 PM-7am EST
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, and monitor virtualized and containerized workloads across Azure, AWS, and VMware.
- Perform infrastructure maintenance including patching, configuration, and lifecycle management of servers and cloud resources.
- Serve as a point of escalation for incident resolution, performing root-cause analysis and driving issues to closure.
- Administer and troubleshoot core network services (DNS, DHCP).
- Provide deep operating system level troubleshooting for both Windows Server and Linux hosts.
- Maintain and manage AWS and Azure infrastructure objects across compute, networking, identity, and security.
- Automate operational tasks through scripting.
- Document operational procedures and contribute to runbooks and knowledge bases.
Required Qualifications
Azure
- Demonstrable hands-on experience operating Microsoft Azure infrastructure, including:
- Virtual machines
- Storage Accounts (blob, file, queue, table)
- Management groups, subscriptions, resource groups, tags
- Virtual networks (VNets), subnets, NAT gateways, Azure Firewall, Load Balancer / App Gateway / Front Door / Traffic Manager, route tables, network security groups (NSGs)
- Private DNS zones and private endpoints / Private Link
- App Services / Web Apps
- Key Vaults
- Entra ID (identity, users, groups, RBAC) and app registrations / service principals
- Managed identities
AWS
- Strong hands-on and project experience with AWS infrastructure and services, including:
- Core AWS services: EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, CloudFront, Workspaces
- Automation & DevOps: Scripting (Python, Bash, Go), Docker, Kubernetes
- AWS Networking: VPCs, VPC peering, NAT gateways, security groups, route tables, and connectivity options like Direct Connect or AWS Site-to-Site VPN
Core Network Services
- Expert-level knowledge of DNS, including forward and reverse lookup zones, record types (A/AAAA, CNAME, PTR, MX, SRV, TXT), conditional forwarders, recursive vs. authoritative resolution, caching, dynamic DNS, and scavenging.
- Expert-level knowledge of DHCP, including scopes, reservations, options, lease management, DHCP relay / IP helpers, and scope failover / redundancy.
Virtualization
- Strong hands-on experience administering and operating VMware / vSphere in a production environment, including virtual machine lifecycle management, host and cluster operations, and troubleshooting.
Operating Systems & Troubleshooting
- Deep Windows Server operating system troubleshooting, including proficiency with tools in the Sysinternals suite such as Process Monitor (Procmon), Process Explorer, and similar diagnostic utilities.
- Solid Linux troubleshooting and administration experience.
- Proficiency with Wireshark or other packet-level analysis tools for diagnosing connectivity and application issues.
Scripting & Automation
- Scripting experience for automating operational and administrative tasks (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, or Python).
General
- Experience with infrastructure monitoring, alerting, and incident resolution workflows.
- Strong communication, documentation, and ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
- Proven experience working in cross-functional teams to deliver technical solutions.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
- Experience managing hybrid cloud environments.
- Kubernetes or container orchestration experience.
- DevOps background, including CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code.
- Azure Arc and Azure Update Manager for hybrid patch management.
- Hands-on AWS experience (e.g., EC2, VPC, IAM).
