Substitute Building Nurse

Purpose Statement

The position of Substitute Building Nurse is to provide direct health services to individual students, parents/guardians and staff. Participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the school health services program.

Job Title: Substitute Building Nurse

Hourly Wage: $175 per day

Reports To: Building Principal

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Hours: Vary based on building, location, and need

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse with valid Iowa licensure
  • Current CPR certification
  • Prior experience in school nursing, or acute care setting

Essential Functions

  • Work well with school personnel, parents, and the public.
  • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of current practices for common childhood illnesses and chronic disease: asthma management, diabetes, insulin pen and pumps, seizure management
  • Ability to perform skilled nursing care
  • Administers medications and treatment as ordered.
  • Provider care for student and staff illness and accidents.
  • Administers care based on individual health care plans and individual emergency care plans.
  • Serves as liaison between the home and the school regarding student health concerns.
  • Document all encounters in the health record system.
  • Follows communicable disease control procedures and informs administration and/or parents regarding school exclusion and readmission.

Working Environment

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
