Availity is a leading healthcare technology company focused on simplifying healthcare administration and solving real-world challenges for healthcare providers, health plans, and patients. Our technology helps reduce complexity so providers can spend less time navigating administrative systems and more time focused on patient care.

About the Role

We are looking for a Development Support Engineer II to provide developer-grade technical support for Availity Extend customers and internal teams. This is a customer-facing technical role requiring Software Engineer II-level knowledge across the application stack, together with strong code-comprehension, debugging, API, integration, cloud, and production-troubleshooting capability, This is more of a code support vs code development role

The engineer will investigate complex customer-reported issues by reading and reviewing application code, tracing execution paths, analyzing logs and telemetry, reviewing API requests and responses, validating authentication flows, examining SQL data, and reproducing issues in controlled environments. The engineer is expected to understand Java, Spring Boot, React.js, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, REST APIs, SQL, Git, CI/CD, AWS, and microservices at an SE2 technical level.

This role does not own feature development or product-roadmap delivery. The primary focus is developer support, production investigation, defect isolation, customer guidance, and engineering-quality escalation. The engineer will work directly with customer developers and partner with Product and Engineering to identify root cause, validate findings, and drive issues through resolution, while mentoring SE1 Development Support Engineers.

Key Responsibilities

· Own complex developer support cases involving APIs, authentication, payloads, integrations, data behaviour, application errors, and production issues.

· Read, review, and debug application code to support technical investigation, issue reproduction, root-cause isolation, and validation.

· Read, understand, and troubleshoot Java and Spring Boot application code to identify technical causes and execution paths.

· Reproduce customer issues using test environments, API clients, test data, existing diagnostic tools, and approved testing methods.

· Trace requests across APIs, services, databases, queues, and cloud components using logs, metrics, traces, and debugging tools.

· Work directly with customer developers to understand implementation patterns, explain system behavior, and guide integration troubleshooting.

· Distinguish customer-code, configuration, data, documentation, environment, and product-defect issues.

· Create engineering-ready defect reports with reproducible steps, evidence, impact, and a clear technical problem statement.

· Partner with Product, Engineering, QA, NOC, and Customer Success during high-impact cases and production incidents.

· Use and improve diagnostic tools, API examples, troubleshooting methods, and support automation to improve resolution speed and consistency.

· Review technical investigations and mentor SE1 Development Support Engineers in debugging, testing, and case ownership.

· Create and maintain knowledge articles, technical runbooks, known-error documentation, and customer-facing guidance.

· Support release readiness, smoke testing, post-deployment validation, and improvement of support observability.

Required Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

· 3–5 years of professional software development, developer support, production-engineering, or comparable technical experience.

· Strong SE2-level knowledge of Java and Spring or Spring Boot, with the ability to understand application design, code paths, dependencies, and runtime behavior.

· SE2-level working knowledge of React.js, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, sufficient to understand and troubleshoot frontend behavior and end-to-end application flows.

· Ability to independently read, review, and debug code for technical investigation, issue reproduction, and root-cause analysis.

· Strong knowledge of REST APIs, HTTP, JSON/XML, error handling, and client-server integration.

· Experience with OAuth 2.0, JWT, API keys, authentication, and authorization troubleshooting.

· Experience writing SQL queries and investigating applications and data behavior.

· Knowledge of unit and integration testing, Git, pull requests, code-review workflows, and how development changes move through CI/CD pipelines.

· Working knowledge of CI/CD, software-release practices, and production diagnostics.

· Experience using logs, metrics, traces, and observability tools to troubleshoot distributed applications.

· Strong customer-facing communication, problem-solving, ownership, and technical writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience supporting external developers, API products, SaaS platforms, SDKs, or integration solutions.

· Experience with React, JavaScript, or TypeScript for reproducing full-stack issues.

· Hands-on exposure to AWS services such as CloudWatch, API Gateway, Lambda, EC2, S3, RDS, SQS, or SNS.

· Experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, messaging, containers, Kubernetes, or EKS.

· Experience using diagnostic tools, support automation, sample integrations, or technical enablement content in customer or production investigations.

· Experience with healthcare technology, healthcare data, or customer integration platforms.

· Experience working with U.S. or global stakeholders in a customer-facing technical role.

Success Measures

· Quality and completeness of technical investigations

· Case ownership and time to resolution

· Customer and stakeholder communication quality

· Defect reproduction and engineering-escalation quality

· Reduction in repeat issues and avoidable engineering escalations

· Support tooling, automation, and knowledge contributions

· Mentoring and technical capability growth within the team

Hiring Process

The hiring process may include application review, recruiter discussion, a technical assessment focused on code comprehension and debugging, technical interviews covering Java, Spring Boot, React.js, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, REST APIs, SQL, Git, CI/CD, AWS, microservices, authentication, cloud and distributed systems, a developer-support investigation scenario, hiring-manager discussion, offer discussion, background verification, and onboarding support.

Equal Opportunity Statement

Availity is committed to building an inclusive workplace where all associates feel valued, respected, and empowered to do their best work. We welcome candidates from diverse backgrounds and encourage individuals who are excited by collaboration, innovation, and meaningful impact to apply.

Eligibility

Video Camera Usage:

Availity fosters a collaborative and open culture where communication and engagement are central to our success. As a remote first company, we are also camera-first and provide all associates with camera/video capability to simulate the office environment. If you are not able to use your camera for all virtual meetings, you should not apply for this role.

Having cameras on helps create a more connected, interactive, and productive environment, allowing teams to communicate more effectively and build stronger working relationships. The usage of cameras also enhances security and protects sensitive company information. Video participation is required to ensure that only authorized personnel are present in meetings and to prevent unauthorized access, data breaches, preventing social engineering, or the sharing of confidential information with non-participants.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
