The posting

Role purpose

You will work out what really drives performance across our estate brands, and build the reporting that helps estate teams act on it. That means understanding how each business functions and runs day to day, defining the metrics its stakeholders actually need, and identifying the leading and lagging indicators behind those metrics so teams can see not only what happened, but what is coming and what they can influence.

You will own reporting projects end to end on Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, from the first business question to a trusted, well-used report, and you will own the metric dictionaries that keep definitions consistent across estates. It is a hands-on role that needs senior technical skills and real comfort in front of stakeholders, in equal measure.

Key responsibilities

Business understanding and metric design

  • Build a working understanding of how each estate and business unit operates: revenue drivers, cost base, operational processes and goals.
  • Work with estate stakeholders to determine the metrics they need to run and grow their business, and challenge requests where a better measure exists.
  • Identify the leading and lagging indicators behind each key metric, and make the relationship between them visible in reporting.
  • Turn ambiguous or loosely defined requests into clear reporting and analytical requirements.

Reporting and dashboard development

  • Own BI and reporting requests end to end: requirements, build, validation, delivery and stakeholder handover.
  • Design, build and maintain intuitive, high-impact Power BI reports and dashboards, with Microsoft Fabric as the primary data platform.
  • Develop and maintain the semantic models, data models and transformations behind reporting, applying good practice in modelling, DAX and performance.
  • Write and interpret SQL to explore, validate, join and analyse data across multiple sources.

Insight and recommendations

  • Report against a stated question: what was expected, what happened, and what should change next.
  • Surface the findings that matter, such as performance gaps, emerging trends and early warning signs in leading indicators, with a recommended action attached.
  • Track whether reports are used and add value, and refine or retire the ones that don't.

Metric definitions and data quality

  • Own and maintain metric dictionaries across our partner estates, so important business metrics have clear, agreed and documented definitions.
  • Work with data engineers, analysts and stakeholders to understand how metrics are derived from source systems, and make sure definitions are applied consistently across datasets and reports.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies between reports, source systems and business expectations, and raise data gaps rather than working around them.

Enablement and stakeholder management

  • Support self-service analytics by helping stakeholders understand the data, reports and agreed metric definitions available to them.
  • Document models, reports and definitions well enough that they stay intelligible without you present.
  • Handle incoming requests and set expectations with estate stakeholders on what is possible and when, especially when priorities compete and deadlines are tight.

What we’re looking for

Essential

  • A relevant tertiary degree, for example in Information Systems, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics or Business Analytics.
  • Typically 5+ years in a BI Analyst, Data Analyst or similar role, with intermediate to senior-level technical skills.
  • Strong, hands-on Power BI experience: data modelling, DAX, Power Query, and publishing and managing content in the Power BI Service, not only building visuals on a model someone else designed.
  • Experience with, or a strong appetite to work in, Microsoft Fabric: lakehouses, warehouses, dataflows, pipelines and semantic models.
  • Strong SQL, and confidence independently exploring, validating and analysing data.
  • A track record of understanding how a business works and turning that into metrics, KPIs and reports that changed decisions.
  • Able to explain, unprompted, how you chose the metrics for a report, which leading indicators sat behind them, and why that was the right call.
  • A high level of attention to detail and an instinct for validating data rather than taking numbers at face value.
  • Clear communication with non-technical audiences: explaining assumptions, discrepancies and findings plainly.
  • Driven, bright and friendly, with strong stakeholder skills and the ability to stay calm and organised under pressure.

Advantageous

  • Experience with Data Studio and/or Tableau.
  • Experience in hospitality, ecommerce, retail or financial reporting.
  • Experience with ERP, POS or hospitality systems such as Sage, Opera or Simphony.
  • Exposure to self-service or AI-enabled analytics tools.
  • Working in Jira alongside a documentation tool such as Confluence or Slite.
  • Afrikaans in addition to English.

How we will know it is working

  • Estate stakeholders have a clear, agreed set of metrics, and know which leading indicators to watch.
  • Reporting the estate and commercial teams trust enough to make decisions on, and use regularly.
  • Metric definitions that are documented, agreed and applied consistently across estates and reports.
  • Fewer discrepancies and one-off requests, and more self-service.
  • A Fabric and Power BI estate that holds up as the portfolio grows, rather than accumulating workarounds.

Perks & Benefits

  • Daily catered lunch.
  • Flexible working hours — core hours are 9am to 3pm.
  • Choice of equipment.
  • Generous training and conference budget.
  • 30% discount at Babylonstoren — online shop, hotel, spa, and farm shops.
  • Arranged admission to Babylonstoren for you and immediate family.
  • Access to Babylonstoren’s recreation centre, gym, swimming pool, and studios.
  • Quarterly socials and team building.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
