The posting

To provide high-quality, commercially focused legal advice and support to BBC Studios’ businesses in APAC with a primary focus on Asia.

The role operates as the most senior Business & Legal Affairs partner in Asia to senior stakeholders, supporting strategic, commercial and operational initiatives while ensuring appropriate governance, risk management and compliance. while contributing to a cohesive, high-performing regional legal team. The role requires a ‘one BBC’ approach with close teamwork and/or embedded ways of working with all Divisions across the organization. This is central to our purpose and culture and is critical to this role.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

Negotiation and contracting: To lead the drafting and negotiation of a wide range of commercial agreements and legal documentation related to related to Channel and Branded Services distribution and streaming, Content Distribution, Advertising and Brands & Licensing, supporting business objectives while identifying and mitigating legal, financial and reputational risk.

1. Advising: To provide accurate, timely, practical and commercially focused legal advice to internal clients including senior stakeholders.

2. Stakeholder management: To positively represent BBC Studios and proactively foster and develop collaborative, creative and commercial relationships at senior level – both externally and internally across the BBC Group

3. Risk management: To mitigate legal, contractual and business risk, and support the resolution of disputes concerning content, brand and IP protection.

4. Compliance: To ensure that standards and frameworks are adhered to and translated into compliant individual deals within a coherent pan-BBC approach. To ensure compliance with BBCS policies and procedures and relevant legislation and regulation.

5. Team management: To line-manage 3 legal counsels. To lead by example in maintaining a culture of teamwork , integrity and empowerment,. To guide, support and help develop other members of the team and to deputize where appropriate.

6. Teamwork: To confidently foster excellent relationships across multiple lines of business and territories and be a strategic business partner. To collaborate effectively with and assist other members of the team as may be required.

7. Project management: To lead or assist on complex to ensure effective delivery and use of resources.

Knowledge, skills, training and experience

Key Criteria:

● Admitted to practice as a lawyer in a common law jurisdiction (Singapore or the UK preferred; US or Australia jurisdictions will also be considered).

● 7-10 years Post-Qualification Experience.

● Fluency in English

● Extensive negotiating, rights management, contracting and copyright experience.

● Experience of managing risk in a complex environment.

● Ability to manage diverse workstreams and to apply complex analytical and problem- solving skills under pressure in a complex, evolving environment.

● Experience of working in an in-house legal team, ideally in a media business

● Knowledge/understanding of the legal and regulatory framework in the region within which the BBC Studios business operates (broadcast, streaming, content distribution, advertising)

● An approach that encompasses teamwork , openness, creativity, flexibility, resilience, passion and energy, in an assured and professional manner.

● Builds and maintains team standards of high performance and professionalism.
