ABOUT THE JOB

OUR MISSION

Boom https://www.boompay.app/ is on a mission to level the playing field for the 110+ million renters in the US by making housing more flexible, affordable, and rewarding. Boom is building a suite of rental financial services for renters and property managers, including tenant screening, rent payment reporting, rent reporting-as-a-service, and a number of integrations with the largest property management systems (PMS). Boom serves renters through the Boom App and property managers via the Boom Platform. Now serving thousands of renters, Boom is led by second-time founder Rob Whiting https://www.linkedin.com/in/robwhiting/ (ex-BCG, Rubicon). It's backed by investors such as Starting Line https://www.startingline.vc/, Clocktower Ventures https://www.clocktowerventures.com/, Gilgamesh Ventures https://www.gilgameshvc.com/ (Petal co-founders), and angels such as William Hockey https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffkauflin/2022/04/21/plaids-billionaire-cofounder-is-back-with-a-new-startupa-fintech-friendly-bank-hes-running-with-his-wife/?sh=df10dc453908 and Zach Perret https://techcrunch.com/2021/01/14/plaid-ceo-touts-new-clarity-after-failed-visa-acquisition/ (Co-founders of Plaid) and Harry Stebbings https://techcrunch.com/2021/06/16/harry-stebbings-turns-up-the-volume-on-20vc-with-new-140m-fund/. OPPORTUNITY

We're expanding our engineering team to meet the growing demands of our B2B partners and B2C users. With a robust product roadmap and new opportunities on the horizon, we're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead one of our product engineering teams, scale how we deliver, and grow the engineers on the team. The specific team you'll lead depends on your background and where we have the biggest need. This role offers the chance to work closely with our Co-founders, product leadership, and senior engineers, contributing directly to the growth of the company as we move from Seed to Series A and beyond.

For this role, we are hiring for candidates in Austin, TX, where our leadership and product team is located. Comp range listed is directional and adjustable +/- based on competency.

Our engineering culture is hands-on and pragmatic -- we value shipping real product, maintaining high standards, and communicating clearly. If you're a player-coach who's excited about building a team, shipping impactful product, and operating in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, reach out.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

- Lead a team of 4-8 engineers on one of our product engineering teams.

- Stay deep in the code. You'll write and ship features alongside your team, not just review their PRs

- Own delivery end to end (planning, prioritization, scope tradeoffs, on-time shipping, performance management) in partnership with your PM

- Run design reviews, code review standards, on-call, standup and incident response

- Grow engineers through regular 1:1s, real feedback, career conversations, and stretch work. Performance manage when needed

- Lead hiring for your team and help raise the bar across the org

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

- 7+ years of engineering experience, including 2+ years managing engineers directly with a track record of developing them

- Strong technical foundation. You've shipped real pieces of a production roadmap and can run a design review, debug a production incident, and make architecture tradeoffs

- Backend-leaning full stack on Ruby (Grape) with React/Next.js and TypeScript on the frontend. Comfortable with third-party APIs (OAuth, webhooks, rate limits, idempotency), observability, on-call, incident management, AWS, and Terraform

- You're already running AI coding agents autonomously, including overnight, to ship.Daily Claude Code use is table stakes. We expect you to lead by example and push your team to do the same

- Strong communicator and self-starter who can represent engineering to non-technical stakeholders and is comfortable with ambiguity in a fast-paced, early-stage environment

- Empathy for our end users, including low-to-moderate-income renters, and a desire to build products that make a difference

BENEFITS OF WORKING AT BOOM

- Competitive salary with stock options

- Full healthcare coverage (health, dental, vision) including 50% coverage for dependents

- 15 days of Paid Time Off (PTO) per year + 3 sick days + all US federal holidays (11 in total) (note: we think unlimited PTO is BS and causes some employees to feel guilty when they take it)

- Company-issued laptop/MacBook

- Company-sponsored training & development

- Regular off-sites, retreats, and other company-sponsored events and travel opportunities

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.

What if my background isn't good enough?

We make the most of the background you have. The CV uses every piece of relevant proof your profile holds, and one of the 25 readers reads your whole profile and flags what the CV left out.

Do you really apply for me?

Yes, on the employer's own form, the hardest ones included. Where a question needs you, you answer it right there and AI suggests the best answer. Don't want us applying from our IP addresses? Use our Chrome extension: we apply straight from your own browser.

Is it a subscription?
