Why Box Needs You

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Automate team, you will be at the heart of Box's workflow automation platform - a product that empowers millions of users to automate complex business processes without writing code. The Automate team is a growing organization of ~30 engineers across four specialized teams, responsible for building the intelligent automation engine, intuitive user interface, and seamless integrations that enable organizations to transform how they work.

In this role, you will design and develop full-stack solutions with a strong emphasis on frontend - you'll spend the majority of your time architecting and building intuitive, high-performance user interfaces in React/TypeScript, while collaborating closely on backend architecture and bringing solid knowledge of the distributed systems that power our automation engine. We expect you to be comfortable working across the full stack, with deep mastery of modern frontend development and strong foundational knowledge in backend systems. You'll work primarily with React/TypeScript alongside backend technologies (with Java experience being a strong plus) to build responsive, performant workflows and applications that seamlessly interact with systems handling millions of daily executions. You'll collaborate with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to innovate on automation capabilities, improve user experience, and integrate with enterprise applications. Your work will directly impact how customers streamline their most critical business processes - from contract lifecycle management to invoice processing to employee onboarding.

What You'll Do

  • Design and implement features for the Box Automate - leading with frontend architecture in React/TypeScript, while actively contributing to distributed systems and backend design discussions
  • Architect and build rich, responsive, and intuitive user interfaces in React that enable users to seamlessly create, configure, and monitor complex automated workflows
  • Collaborate on developing and integrating with backend services and distributed systems that power workflow automation
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product, design, and infrastructure to define requirements, propose technical solutions, and deliver features on schedule
  • Review code, mentor junior engineers, and help shape our engineering practices
  • Participate in our on-call rotation - when it's your week, you're expected to be reachable outside business hours, including evenings and weekends, to respond to production incidents

Who You Are

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with demonstrated expertise in full-stack development
  • Strong proficiency in React, TypeScript, and modern frontend architecture, with solid knowledge of backend principles, REST APIs, and distributed systems (proficiency or experience with Java is a strong advantage)
  • Comfortable operating across the full stack at a professional level - you can spearhead frontend architecture independently while understanding and interfacing with backend services and distributed systems independently
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems and backend architecture, including API contracts, caching strategies, database design, and asynchronous event processing
  • Experience with cloud platforms (GCP, AWS or Azure) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and DevOps practices
  • Experience influencing technical direction beyond your immediate team - through RFCs, design docs, or cross-team collaboration
  • Able to manage your own delivery and communicate progress clearly under deadlines
  • Fluent English proficiency (written and verbal)

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with workflow automation, business process management, or integration platforms (nice to have, not required)
  • Hands-on experience with Java and backend microservices architecture is a strong plus
  • Track record of leading cross-functional projects or mentoring junior engineers
  • Experience with enterprise integrations and API design
  • Contributions to open-source projects or care about code quality
