The Opportunity: We are seeking a skilled Reliability Engineer to support our Specialty Engineering team. In this role, you will drive reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (RAMS) initiatives for spacecraft, launch vehicles, and ground support systems — ensuring our hardware and software meet mission assurance requirements for high-reliability, long-duration, and often unmaintainable space applications.
Responsibilities:
- Perform FMEA/FMECA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Reliability Block Diagrams (RBD) for spacecraft subsystems to identify single points of failure and mission-critical risks.
- Develop reliability predictions and lifetime assessments for components operating in extreme space environments (radiation, vacuum, thermal cycling, vibration/launch loads) using tools such as MIL-HDBK-217, NPRD/EPRD, or physics-of-failure models.
- Develop and track reliability metrics including MTBF, failure rates, redundancy margins, and mission success probability across design life.
- Support design reviews (PDR, CDR, MRR) by presenting reliability analyses, risk assessments, and open-item dispositions to internal and customer/program stakeholders
- Collaborate with quality, components, and parts/materials engineering to ensure compliance with applicable standards
- Assess supplier/vendor component reliability data, qualification status, and heritage for flight hardware procurement decisions.
- Contribute to lessons-learned databases and continuous improvement of reliability processes supporting Danbury program missions.
- Support Electrical Engineering in worst-case analysis (WCA), derating analysis, and parts stress analysis per NASA/aerospace standards
- Support radiation effects analysis (TID, SEE, displacement damage) in coordination with parts engineering to ensure component suitability for mission orbit/duration.
Qualifications:
Required:
- U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems Engineering, or related technical field.
- 4–7 years of relevant experience in reliability/mission assurance engineering, preferably supporting spacecraft, launch vehicle, or satellite programs.
- Working knowledge of reliability tools and methodologies: FMEA/FMECA, FTA, RBD, Weibull analysis, worst-case/derating analysis.
- Familiarity with space-industry reliability and mission assurance standards
- Understanding of space environmental effects on hardware (radiation, thermal vacuum, launch vibration/shock) and their impact on reliability.
- Experience with reliability/statistical software (e.g., Windchill Risk and Reliability, Minitab, MathCAD).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work through ambiguous, high-consequence design trade-offs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience presenting at technical design reviews.
Desired:
- Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Familiarity with radiation hardness assurance (RHA) processes and EEE parts selection for flight hardware.
- CRE (Certified Reliability Engineer) certification or equivalent.
