The posting

Introduction

Join our multidisciplinary team for a sandwich year placement in embedded software, where you’ll contribute to the development of innovative technologies for healthcare devices.

Candidates can start between May–September 2027.

There is no deadline for this role, as we recruit on a rolling basis. Once the position is filled, we will close the advert. We encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

What we do

Each project we undertake is different, and at the cutting edge of technology. This means we can't talk about much of our ongoing work, but here are some examples of completed projects that we are excited to share:

  • An emergency-use ventilator, developed in just over six weeks in response to the government’s Ventilator Challenge
  • A neurostimulation device allowing treatment to improve, or even restore, someone’s ability to walk
  • An autoinjector capable of delivering a wide range of drugs, while being intuitive to use and beautiful to look at

What you'll be doing

From day one, you’ll be part of our multidisciplinary medical development team, tackling real technical problems while receiving guidance and training from experienced engineers. You’ll gain access to designing and developing embedded software to a high standard. You will be part of a team developing technologies that can make a meaningful difference to people’s lives.

During your internship, you'll likely:

  • Design, develop, and test embedded software for complex medical systems used in diagnostic, surgical, implantable device, and drug-delivery applications.
  • Contribute to a wide range of projects that span the full software development lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary and supportive team, gaining exposure to systems involving electronics, optics, fluidics, robotics, and user-interface components.
  • Work with industry best practices such as continuous integration, automated testing and analysis, and model-based systems engineering.

What You Can Bring

The most important technical skill for this role is programming in C.

The following skills and experience are advantageous:

  • Experience with other languages such as Rust, Python or C++
  • Working in a team using version control (ideally Git) and peer code reviews
  • Contributing to open-source software
  • Unit testing or other verification techniques
  • Experience developing embedded software
  • Knowledge of electronics and controlling peripherals using interfaces such as UART/I2C/SPI
  • Signal processing and/or control theory
  • Data science and/or AI

Knowledge of biology or medical subjects is not a requirement, though you should be enthusiastic about applying your technical skills to this field of application.

Application requirements

To apply for an internship role you must:

  • Be currently studying towards a degree in a relevant field such as Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • Have experience programming in C.
  • Be eligible to undertake a 12-month industrial placement as part of that course.

Your CV should include all your A Level (or equivalent) subjects and grades, where applicable, as well as university modules, coursework, projects or other experience that demonstrates your relevant skills.

A covering statement is welcome but is not required.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.

What if my background isn't good enough?

We make the most of the background you have. The CV uses every piece of relevant proof your profile holds, and one of the 25 readers reads your whole profile and flags what the CV left out.

Do you really apply for me?

Yes, on the employer's own form, the hardest ones included. Where a question needs you, you answer it right there and AI suggests the best answer. Don't want us applying from our IP addresses? Use our Chrome extension: we apply straight from your own browser.
