Position Title: Machinist II
Job Description Summary:
The Machinist II is responsible for machining test specimens and parts within the Metallurgical Laboratory (Met Lab) while safely operating a variety of manual and CNC machine tools. This position supports laboratory testing and manufacturing operations through precision machining, equipment maintenance, quality compliance, and adherence to all safety standards. The Machinist II works under moderate supervision and is expected to operate multiple work centers, maintain equipment, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives while supporting production and business requirements.
What You’ll Do:
The Machinist II will safely operate manual and CNC machine tools including lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other machining equipment to produce test specimens and parts according to specifications and work instructions. This role will perform routine machine setups, machining operations, basic CNC functions, and daily maintenance activities to ensure equipment reliability and performance. The successful candidate will inspect work for quality, identify and escalate safety or quality concerns, and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
The Machinist II will support laboratory and production operations by prioritizing assigned work, following established procedures, maintaining material traceability, and collaborating with supervisors and team members to meet departmental objectives. The role may also provide support outside of the machinist area as business needs require. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, safe work practices, and a commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 2 years of machining experience in a manufacturing, machine shop, laboratory, or industrial environment.
- Experience operating manual machining equipment such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
- Basic experience operating CNC machining equipment.
- Working knowledge of machine shop practices, machining techniques, blueprint interpretation, and shop mathematics.
- Knowledge of machinability of metals and layout techniques.
- Ability to safely operate machining equipment and follow all safety procedures.
- Ability to inspect work and identify quality concerns.
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot routine machining issues.
- Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment while following established procedures and direction.
- Basic computer skills and proficiency using standard software applications.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Vocational School Certificate in Machining, Manufacturing Technology, or related field.
- Completion of a Machinist Apprenticeship Program.
- Experience operating CNC machine tools including setup and programming functions.
- Experience with equipment such as Okuma, Kellenberger, DCM, Toyoda, Hurco, Mitsubishi, Okamoto, Jones & Shipman, or similar machining platforms.
- CNC programming experience.
- Experience supporting metallurgical laboratory operations, testing environments, or specialty alloy manufacturing.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement principles.
- Experience working in aerospace, metals manufacturing, laboratory, or other regulated industrial environments.
- Demonstrated ability to work across multiple machining processes and work centers.
