Position Location and Supervision

The position is located Fort Collins, CO, working in the Facilities Management Department. This position does not have formal supervisory authority. This full-time, non-exempt position.

Unit Statement

Services include engineering, design, renovations, and maintenance of building structures, electrical and mechanical systems, fire protection, HVAC/R, plumbing, keyless access, door operators, custodial services, waste and recycling, landscaping, and paving. Operations also manages district energy and utility systems, and provides campus support for facility use and access.

Position Summary

Position provides maintenance and repairs to Colorado State University vehicles and equipment. Work is primarily performed on tractors/mowers/carts with a GVWR under 8,000lbs, but can at times assist with heavy equipment or snow removal equipment repairs when needed.

This is a frontline, non-supervisory role regarding direct employee discipline. However, in a lead capacity, the mechanic may be tasked with assigning tasks, training apprentices, and checking the quality of work performed by lower-tier staff.

This position will not have any subordinates.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Diagnostics and Repair: Troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.
  • Disassemble, repair, or overhaul engines, transmissions, and braking systems.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections, lubrications, and tune-ups to prevent equipment breakdowns and extend asset life.
  • Record Keeping: Accurately track time, material usage, and services performed using computerized fleet management systems.

Conditions of Employment

  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires.)
  • Pre-employment Physical - extra heavy lifting.
  • Valid driver's license - Colorado regular – Ability to obtain a CDL class B with air brakes within 1 year of hire
  • Essential Services Designation - Required to be on duty to perform essential and/or emergency services of the agency without delay or interruption.
  • Shift Work - Snow removal outside normal business hours.
  • In-person

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to two (2) years.

Preferred Qualifications:

The highly desired candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, personal characteristics, and experience directly related and critical to this position:

  • Knowledge of and experience servicing golf carts, turf carts and/or UTV's
  • Experience servicing grounds equipment such as mowers, aerators, etc.
  • Experience servicing mid to large heavy equipment such as Bobcats, loaders, tractors, etc.
  • Experience with welding and fabrication
