Specific information regarding this recruitment process are listed below:

  • Appointment Type: Temporary Exempt - This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The duration of the appointment shall not exceed 36 months.
  • Work Location: Police Academy - 350 Amber Drive, San Francisco, CA 94131
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Full-time, up to one day a week Telecommuting work schedule available in line with CCSF policy based on available work/assigned duties. Some assignments may require working weekends and/or holidays.

Job Description

Under general direction, the 1767 Media Programming Specialist performs specialized professional duties in digital video production, post-production, motion graphics, and visual design. Serving primarily within the Police Academy, this position operates with a high degree of independence to design, shoot, and edit high-quality instructional and curriculum-based training videos. The position may also produce a variety of non-training media as assigned.

Essentials Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Police Academy Training Video Production: Plan, shoot, and edit structured instructional video modules, tactical scenarios, and curriculum content in collaboration with Academy instructors and subject matter experts to support recruit and departmental training.
  2. Post-Production & Non-Linear Editing: Assemble raw footage, perform audio mixing, color correction, and pacing adjustments using non-linear editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro) to deliver polished video products.
  3. Motion Graphics & Visual Packaging: Design and animate 2D and 3D motion graphics, lower thirds, title cards, animated typography, and infographics (using tools like Adobe After Effects) to reinforce instructional concepts and maintain departmental visual branding.
  4. Field & Tactical Videography: Transport, set up, and operate digital video cameras, field lighting kits, audio microphones, and grip equipment during in-studio shoots, tactical simulation exercises, and on-location events.
  5. Digital Asset Management & Export Optimization: Encode, compress, catalog, and archive raw and completed video assets to ensure seamless delivery across internal e-learning platforms, web, social media channels, and digital signage.

The Media Programming Specialist performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To be considered, you must possess the following education and experience:

1. Experience: Four (4) years of verifiable professional-level broadcast, video production, post-production editing, or multimedia content creation experience.

AND

2. License: Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Substitution:

  • A certificate from a recognized media production program may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in broadcasting, graphic design, or a related field may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.

Supplemental Information: Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: travel to production locations and moving and/or lifting of heavy equipment; exposure to disagreeable weather conditions; working in small confined spaces, among crowds, or unpredictable field conditions.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience producing instructional, educational, or training media.

Note: One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Background Investigation: Prior to employment with the San Francisco Police Department, a thorough background investigation will be conducted to determine the candidate’s suitability for employment. The investigation may include, but not be limited to: criminal history records, driving records, drug/alcohol screening, and other related employment and personal history records. Reasons for rejection may include use of controlled substances and alcohol, felony conviction, repeated or serious violations of the law, inability to work with co-workers, inability to accept supervision, inability to follow rules and regulations or other relevant factors. Candidates may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening and must clear Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprinting. Criminal records will be carefully reviewed; candidates who do not report their complete criminal records on their applications will be disqualified. Applicants will be fingerprinted.
