Salary for Traffic Engineer II: $96,610 - $125,262
Salary for Traffic Engineer III: $101,229 - $138,415
Salary for Traffic Engineer IV: $111,858 - $131,571
The City of Arvada is hiring a Traffic Engineer II, III, or IV to help improve traffic safety and mobility throughout our growing community. This role involves designing and managing traffic and transportation projects, reviewing engineering plans and traffic impact studies, administering construction contracts, and supporting roadway, intersection, bicycle, pedestrian, and traffic signal improvements. You’ll collaborate with city departments, developers, contractors, and community stakeholders to ensure projects meet city standards and promote safe, efficient transportation.
Traffic Engineer Positions (II, III, and IV) offer a defined career progression path, with advancement based on education, experience, professional licenses, certifications, knowledge, and performance. Traffic Engineer IV is the highest level in this career path.
Essential Job Functions
- Prepares routine to moderately complex Requests for Proposals (RFPs), traffic and transportation studies, right-of-way acquisition documentation, and design plans for transportation infrastructure projects.
- Develops bid packages and construction contracts for routine to moderately complex public traffic and transportation infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory and project-specific requirements.
- Administers routine to moderately complex public traffic and transportation infrastructure contracts, which may include preparation of progress payments, negotiation of change orders, resolving contract payment disputes, and ensuring compliance with provisions in the contract.
- Manages capital improvement projects involving intersection upgrades, roadway enhancements, and bicycle, pedestrian, and traffic signal improvements.
- Receives and responds to requests from the general public regarding signing, speeding, street lighting and other traffic issues.
- Reviews engineering plans and traffic impact analysis reports submitted by other parties, recommending revisions for reasonableness, compatibility with existing infrastructure, and compliance with the City’s Engineering Code of Standards and Specifications for the Design and Construction of Public Improvements, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) guidelines, and applicable highway access codes.
- Enforces the city’s Engineering Code of Standards and Specifications for the Design and Construction of Public Improvements related to traffic and transportation.
- Reviews and coordinates programs and projects with governmental agencies, districts, landowners, contractors, and consultants.
- Assists in negotiation of acquisition of right of way from property owners.
- Communicates and interacts with a variety of interests including but not limited to: elected officials, government and quasi-government representatives, districts, landholders, developers, citizens and others as needed to perform the duties and functions of the traffic engineer II position.
- Prepares budgets and reports on capital improvement / maintenance projects for public works programs.
- Proposes updates to the Engineering Code of Standards and Specifications for the Design and Construction of Public Improvements related to traffic and transportation.
- Assists with development of project budgets and oversees expenditures of the project funds.
- Analyzes alternative solutions to projects to determine the most adequate and cost effective solution.
- Prepares traffic sign and marking work orders, parking permits and assists in reviewing temporary traffic control permits.
- Assist with design, timing, and maintenance of traffic signals as needed.
- Provides technical resources to other city departments to ensure that applicable traffic standards (City Code, MUTCD, CDOT) are met.
- Travels to and attends team and organizational meetings, training, events and activities and appropriately and professionally represents the department.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Ability to represent division on various city committees and outside organizations.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of traffic and transportation engineering, including standards, policies, and technical issues.
- Knowledge of public works practices and procedures, planning, and administration.
- Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and municipal traffic and transportation standards.
- Knowledge and ability to apply originality and judgment in the evaluation, selection, and adaptation of standard traffic and transportation engineering techniques.
- Experience in preparing and negotiating routine contractor and vendor contracts.
- Knowledge and ability to apply independent evaluation, selection and application of standard engineering techniques.
- Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.
- Ability to prioritize multiple and changing work requests while meeting the many needs of the customers/users.
- Ability to exercise sound initiative and judgment as well as make decisions within the scope of assigned authority.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
Traffic Engineer II
License & Certification
- Colorado Engineer In Training (EIT) certification required.
- A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Work Experience Related
- Two (2) or more years of experience in traffic or transportation engineering.
Traffic Engineer III
License & Certification
- Professional Engineering (PE)License required. Colorado PE or ability to obtain within 6-months of employment).
- A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Work Experience Related
- Four (4) or more years of progressively responsible experience in traffic or transportation engineering.
Work Experience Preferred
- Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
Traffic Engineer IV
License & Certification
- Professional Engineering (PE) License required. Colorado PE or ability to obtain within 6-months of employment).
- A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Work Experience Related
- Six (6) years of experience as a Professional Engineer in the focus area.
Work Experience Preferred
- Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.
- Master’s Degree in traffic or civil engineering or related field.
- Demonstrated experience successfully leading major projects and/or project teams.
Other Qualifications
- Must obtain and maintain a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Certification.
- Must pass a criminal background check and a driving record check, if required by the position.
Physical Demands
- Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal.
Hazards
- Minimal exposure to hazards are typically found in general office environment where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident.
Work Environment
- Exposure to routine office noise and equipment.
