Our workforce plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional government services to both our citizens and fellow City employees. Apply now to join an organization where you truly make a difference.

Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:

The responsibility of police school crossing guards is to ensure the safety of pedestrians and vehicles within designated school zones and crossing areas. They work part-time, typically in 30-minute shifts for each assigned school zone. Depending on availability and the distance between zones, guards may work multiple shifts per day. The school crossing guard position is divided into two categories: permanent and substitute. Permanent guards have specific assigned school zones, while substitute guards fill vacancies and may become permanent when openings arise.

Personnel must stay informed of work-related information through city email accounts, and short notice availability may also be communicated via text message. School crossing guards are required to complete all assigned training modules through our online portals, Power DMS and Taleo. Access to the VBtime application is essential, as guards need to verify the accuracy of their bi-monthly timecards, which are managed by the program coordinator.

Requirements: Applicants for the School Crossing Guard position must pass an interview and undergo a police background investigation, in addition to being physically and mentally capable of performing their duties. These duties include standing and walking while holding a stop sign, having good eyesight and hearing to identify hazards, while possessing effective communication skills and a professional demeanor. They must work in all weather conditions and without interruption. Check their city email on a regular basis. Respond to text and phone calls as needed. While on duty, they are required to wear only the uniform provided by the City, which must be kept in good condition and not altered in any way.

Preferences: In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application. Desired qualifications for the position include prior experience as a school crossing guard, directing traffic and pedestrians, or other related public safety work. Additionally, experience working with children is preferred. The ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, wind, and snow is also required. Basic computer skills and familiarity with email programs like Outlook and other app-based programs are also desired.

Special Requirements/Instructions:

  • Applicants who are currently receiving benefits through the Virginia Retirement System are encouraged to contact VRS (www.varetire.org) to ensure that this part-time employment opportunity will not impact their current benefits.
  • Successful completion of an interview and police background investigation.
  • Must be willing to check City email messages on a regular basis.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
