More than a career - a chance to make a difference in people's lives.

This position is seeking an experienced and technically strong Lead Engineer to join the Grid Strategy & Advancement Engineering Application team. The team owns the Technical Interconnection Requirements for Large Load (TIRLL), including ongoing implementation and updates, and is developing Duke Energy's Computational Load Commissioning Process in response to the direction from NERC. This role will provide technical leadership for complex and evolving large-load integration challenges, including technical analysis, requirements and process development, commissioning, regulatory and industry engagement, customer facility evaluation, and cross-functional engineering execution.

The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work, and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for complex engineering work supporting the interconnection, commissioning, and performance of large computational load facilities.
  • Lead or support the implementation, interpretation, and continued development of TIRLL and the Computational Load Commissioning Process.
  • Evaluate complex technical issues and develop practical requirements, recommendations, and solutions that support system reliability and business objectives.
  • Apply knowledge of power system studies, protection and control, power quality, customer facility design, and other relevant disciplines to effectively engage internal subject matter experts and customers in defining and interpreting TIRLL and commissioning requirements.
  • Coordinate cross-functional engineering activities and communicate complex technical matters among internal subject matter experts, customers, developers, consultants, and industry stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance to other engineers and support the development of team capabilities, processes, and consistent engineering practices.
  • Plan and manage engineering deliverables, prepare technical documentation, and support effective execution of major initiatives and projects.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • 8 years related work experience
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with a strong foundation in power systems and demonstrated technical leadership in a combination of the following areas are encouraged to apply. Experience across every area is not required.

  • Master's degree in Engineering.
  • Advanced experience in one or more relevant areas, such as power system modeling and studies, EMT analysis, protection and control, equipment performance, power quality, large-load integration, or customer facility engineering.
  • Knowledge of power-electronics-interfaced equipment, computational loads, or the interaction between customer facilities and bulk power system performance.
  • Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements, NERC reliability standards, FERC regulatory frameworks, or industry standards.
  • Experience developing technical requirements, engineering processes, commissioning practices, or other programs addressing emerging technical needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex engineering work, guide other engineers, coordinate cross-functional initiatives, and manage technical deliverables.
  • Ability to develop sound engineering recommendations and clearly communicate complex matters to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Ability to address unfamiliar engineering challenges and adapt to evolving technical and business priorities.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees must live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility, not greater than 50 miles one way. Employees are expected to report to their assigned Duke Energy facility as required and directed by their manager, on average 3 full workdays per regular workweek.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
