Immersive Learning Student Employee - Investment Competition and Club Coordinator

About this Opportunity:

This position is part of Ensign College's Immersive Learning Student Employment Program. The focus of this program is providing student employees opportunities to gain real-world, career applicable skills and experience, reinforced with integrated mentoring and a course (CAR295) that helps reinforce CWC learning.

Unlike traditional student employment, Immersive Learning positions combine hands-on work experience with guided reflection through CAR 295R, helping students strengthen College Wide Capabilities while building career-ready skills.

As a participant in this program, student employees will:

  • Enroll in CAR 295R (0.5 credit) each semester they are employed (up to three semesters).
  • Complete a College Wide Capability Project each semester that connects workplace experiences with professional learning and career development.
  • Participate in periodic program assessments that help the College evaluate the impact of the Immersive Learning experience.

Position Summary

The Finance Program is launching an in-house investment competition for Ensign College finance and accounting students, opening September, 2026. The competition runs three months and combines personal finance with portfolio management. Participants apply budgeting and retirement planning principles, build and manage simulated portfolios, document the reasoning behind their decisions, and compete on risk-adjusted performance.

The Coordinator sets up and runs the competition end to end under the direction of the Program Chair. This is an operational and project-management role, not a research assistantship. The student is responsible for making the competition launch on time, run consistently week to week, and finish with a clear set of results and a record that lets the program repeat it.

The role has a second phase. Groundwork for a student investment club begins during the competition’s final weeks, and the club launches once the competition closes, using the competition roster as the recruiting pipeline. That work includes drafting the club charter, completing the college’s student organization requirements, building the membership base, marketing the club across campus, and supporting its first meetings and officer structure.

Key Responsibilities

Setup and Administration

  • Configure and maintain the competition platform, including participant accounts, portfolio parameters, starting balances, and trading rules.
  • Draft and maintain the competition rulebook, entry requirements, and code of conduct, in coordination with the Program Chair.
  • Manage registration, verify eligibility, and maintain the participant roster.

Weekly Operations

  • Update and publish standings on a set weekly schedule.
  • Monitor participant activity for rule compliance and flag issues to the Program Chair.
  • Respond to participant questions about rules, platform use, and deadlines.
  • Troubleshoot platform and access problems, escalating when needed.

Communication and Promotion

  • Promote the competition to finance and accounting students through class visits, email, digital signage, and campus channels.
  • Write and send participant communications, including announcements, reminders, and results.
  • Coordinate kickoff, midpoint, and closing events, including room reservations, materials, and awards logistics.

Investment Club Launch (Second Phase)

  • Assist the Program Chair in establishing a student investment club, including the charter, purpose statement, and any college requirements for recognized student organizations.
  • Build the founding membership from competition participants and the broader student body.
  • Coordinate and develop with the marketing department the club’s marketing: launch messaging, recruiting materials, campus outreach, and an information session.
  • Coordinate early club logistics, including meeting schedule, room reservations, agendas, and officer elections.
  • Draft the club’s first activity calendar in coordination with the Program Chair.

Reporting and Continuity

  • Track participation, engagement, and outcome data throughout the competition.
  • Prepare a closing summary report for the Program Chair when the competition ends.
  • Maintain written procedures and a setup checklist so the competition can be run again with less lead time.
  • Document what the competition would require to run year-round as an ongoing Ensign program, with recognition for top performers each quarter.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled Ensign College student in good academic standing.
  • Completed FIN 301 (Introduction to Finance), or equivalent finance or accounting coursework, with an understanding of personal finance and investment fundamentals.
  • Reliable, self-directed, and able to hold a weekly schedule with limited supervision.
  • Comfortable with spreadsheets and web-based platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed or currently enrolled in FIN 335 (Investments).
  • Experience organizing an event, club activity, or student program.
  • Familiarity with trading or portfolio simulation platforms.
  • Basic design or social media skills for promotional materials.

What the Student Gains

This role is built to be a development opportunity, not a set of errands. The student will:

  • Run a live program from planning through execution and reporting.
  • Administer an investment platform and work with market data every week.
  • Practice project management, stakeholder communication, program marketing, and networking.
  • Help stand up a student organization from scratch, from charter to first meeting.
  • Finish with a documented project and measurable results to bring into interviews

All student employees accept as conditions of employment that they will:

  • Be currently enrolled as an Ensign College student taking at least 6 credits (3 per block) and in good academic standing.
  • Refrain from behavior or expression that seriously and adversely affects the college mission or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Act in accordance with the Church Educational System Honor Code and the Dress and Grooming Principles and Expectations.
  • Comply with all college policies and procedures.
  • Commit to bring about the purposes of Ensign College.
  • Maintain these conditions of employment on an ongoing basis.

Ensign College is an equal opportunity employer and does not unlawfully discriminate in its hiring or employment practices on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex (including pregnancy), age, disability, genetic information, or veteran’s status. As an educational institution owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ensign College gives lawful hiring preference to qualified, faithful members of the Church who are in good standing.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
