The posting

Company Description Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods. We build, power, and evolve the tools and technologies that connect millions of entrepreneurs with millions of buyers around the world. As an Etsy employee, you will tackle unique, meaningful, and large-scale problems alongside passionate coworkers, all the while making a rewarding impact and Keeping Commerce Human.

We believe exceptional companies are built by exceptional teams, and we're intentional about it. That means hiring great people, setting them up for success from day one, and giving them real reasons to grow their careers here. We invest in development that goes beyond promotions, and we foster the trust and relationships that help people do their best work together.

What’s the Role?

Etsy is looking for a Software Engineer I to join the Marketplace Makers team. Marketplace Makers are the sellers who create the best buyer experiences on Etsy, and our team builds the programs and tools that recognize and grow them. We work across experiences such as the Star Seller program as well as seller tooling in Shop Manager.

As a Software Engineer I, you will build and ship full-stack web features in PHP and React/TypeScript, learn how Etsy's platform works end to end, and grow your craft with support from a team that pairs, reviews, and teaches. This is an early-career role: we are looking for someone with a solid programming foundation who is eager to learn how production software is built at scale.

This is a full time role reporting to the Engineering Manager of Marketplace Makers.

What’s this team like at Etsy?

● We are a multi-functional product team distributed across the US and Mexico. The team is composed of software engineers, a product manager, a product designer, a researcher, an analyst, and a copywriter.

● We work on problems that directly affect millions of sellers: how they earn and keep Star Seller status, and how we motivate the practices, like fast responses and on-time shipping, that create great buyer experiences.

● We ship in small increments behind feature flags, run A/B experiments to validate changes, and use data to decide what to build next.

● At Etsy, we believe that code is craft and that small, empowered, self-motivated teams can do big things. We take advantage of our continuous deployment system and cultivate a blameless culture based on trust and a commitment to learning. Learn more on our engineering blog: Code as Craft.

What does the day-to-day look like?

● Build and maintain well-scoped product features across our PHP backend and React/TypeScript frontend, with guidance from senior engineers.

● Translate designs and product requirements into production-ready code, and write tests that keep it working.

● Participate in code review, both giving and receiving feedback.

● Help instrument and analyze A/B experiments on seller-facing features such as the Star Seller dashboard and seller inbox.

● Investigate bugs and support issues, and communicate clearly about what you find and how you fixed it.

● Collaborate with product, design, research, and analytics partners in planning, standups, and retrospectives.

● Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

● A foundation in software engineering, from a degree in computer science or a related field, a bootcamp, or equivalent self-directed experience.

● Some experience building web applications, through internships, co-ops, personal projects, or professional work, in languages such as PHP, Python, Ruby, Java, Go, or JavaScript/TypeScript.

● Curiosity about how things work and the persistence to debug until you understand the root cause.

● Comfort asking questions, taking feedback, and learning in the open.

● An interest in solving user problems and in writing code that is readable and maintainable.

● Clear written and spoken communication with both technical and non-technical teammates.

Compensation & Benefits

In addition to salary, you'll be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family. Base salary is determined by your location, skills, and experience.

Etsy uses two geographic pay zones to reflect the labor markets where we compete for talent: one called Geo-1, covering the New York City metropolitan area, San Francisco Bay Area, and Seattle metropolitan area, and one called Geo-2, covering all other U.S. locations. Salary ranges for this role vary by zone and are listed below.

Location

We prioritize candidates based within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office. Depending on proximity, we ask team members to come in once or twice per week. Remote candidates outside commutable distance may be considered on a case-by-case basis, with the expectation of occasional travel to the office. Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
