De operator bouwt de lijn op, stelt machines in en voert omstellingen en opstarten uit. Daarna bedient de operator de apparatuur en controleert die de veiligheid en kwaliteit van producten, verpakking en etikettering. Bij kleine storingen wordt zelfstandig gehandeld; grotere storingen worden volgens protocollen gemeld. Ook instrueert de operator medewerkers van de lijn en geeft vaktechnische aanwijzingen. Productiegegevens worden geregistreerd en orde en netheid zijn onderdeel van de werkzaamheden. Daarbij gelden het bedrijfsbeleid, het kwaliteitsbeleid en het arbobeleid. De functie combineert de bediening van machines met het bewaken van de voortgang en kwaliteit van de productie. De operator houdt zicht op de lijn en voert de werkzaamheden uit met aandacht voor de afgesproken doelstellingen en protocollen. De controles op producten, verpakking en etikettering vormen een vast onderdeel van het werk.
