Client: Southwark Council Service Area: Environment, Sustainability and Leisure / Waste & Cleansing

Hours: 36 hours per week

Working Pattern: Drivers must be flexible and able to work beyond the contracted finish time where required to ensure all collections are completed.

Start Date: 06 July 2026 Duration: 6 weeks

£18.55 per hour

Job Overview

Southwark Council is seeking 2 HGV Drivers / Dustcart Drivers to support the Waste & Cleansing service.

The role will involve driving refuse collection vehicles, working alongside loaders, assisting with loading duties and ensuring daily collection rounds are completed safely and on time.

The successful candidates must have previous dustcart driving experience, preferably within a local authority or waste services environment. They must also be able to work well within a small team of drivers and loaders, support manual handling duties and plan their route through the daily schedule.

This role requires previous dustcart driving experience.

Candidates must hold a valid Driving Licence and CPC Driving Qualification.

Interviewees are expected to attend the on-site interview with their driver cards for physical inspection.

Drivers must be prepared to assist with loading and work flexibly beyond the contracted finish time where required to complete all collections.

Candidates without dustcart driving experience, CPC qualification and valid driver cards are unlikely to be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive refuse collection / dustcart vehicles safely
  • Complete waste collection rounds in a timely manner
  • Work alongside loaders as part of a small collection team
  • Assist loaders with loading duties where required
  • Plot and follow daily collection routes
  • Work flexibly to ensure all collections are completed
  • Work beyond the contracted finish time where operationally required
  • Carry out duties safely and professionally
  • Support manual handling duties, with training provided
  • Communicate effectively with loaders, drivers and supervisors
  • Maintain good working relationships within a small settled team
  • Follow waste collection procedures and service requirements
  • Attend interview with driver cards for inspection

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Previous dustcart driving experience
  • Experience driving within waste services, refuse collection or similar operations
  • Valid Driving Licence
  • CPC Driving Qualification
  • Driver cards available for physical inspection
  • Ability to work alongside loaders
  • Willingness to assist with loading duties
  • Ability to plan and follow daily collection routes
  • Flexible approach to working hours
  • Ability to work beyond contracted finish time where collections are not complete
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well in a small team
  • Reliable and safety-conscious approach
  • Understanding of working around refuse collection operations
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete rounds efficiently

Desirable

  • Previous local authority waste collection experience
  • Manual Handling training
  • Driver assistance experience
  • Experience working in a settled refuse collection team
  • Knowledge of Southwark or similar London collection routes

Manual Handling training can be provided.

Interview will be held on site at:

Unit 4 Sandgate Industrial Estate 57 Sandgate Street London SE15 1LE

The interview should last no more than 30 minutes.

Candidates must attend with their driver cards for physical inspection.
