The Role

The Quality and Reliability Engineer supports the Romulus Propulsion transmission line by leading rapid problem solving, warranty and customer issue investigations, return-part analysis, and data-driven quality improvements. This role will work with the Resident Product Engineer, Red X team, Production and others to perform deep-dive technical analysis of transmission failures and related components and help drive corrective action on the plant floor. This role develops and administers reliability, warranty, and corrective-action plans; and communicates findings and recommendations to plant leadership, engineering, manufacturing, service, and other stakeholders.

The Quality and Reliability Engineer will help reduce customer impact and warranty cost, improve transmission quality and reliability, support effective countermeasures, and help the plant maintain compliance with BIQ IV standards, GQRs, and applicable quality-system requirements.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Reduce warranty cost expenditures, repeat repairs, and customer impact associated with transmission and propulsion-system concerns.
  • Lead rapid problem solving and structured root-cause analysis for customer issues, warranty concerns, internal quality issues, and failed transmissions or transmission components.
  • Work with Red X team to perform technical analysis of failed parts and assemblies using returned-part evaluation, teardown, inspection, testing, data analysis, dealership or field information, and manufacturing process review.
  • Publish clear warranty and quality investigation reports based on failed-part analysis, dealership or field visits, phone contacts, claim information, returned parts, and plant data.
  • Maintain an accurate log of returned parts, including key claim information, failure mode, status, ownership, disposition, and tracking details.
  • Communicate investigation results to appropriate teams and collaborate with issue owners to identify, develop, validate, and implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Develop and apply test methodologies, fixtures, and apparatus for physical testing of warranty-returned transmissions, parts, and components.
  • Develop hands-on expertise in transmission diagnosis, repair methodology, component teardown, inspection, and failure analysis.
  • Monitor field, engineering, manufacturing, dealership, and service feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of countermeasures and identify emerging issues.
  • Analyze quality, warranty, reliability, and production data to identify trends, prioritize actions, and measure improvement.
  • Develop and administer reliability, warranty, and corrective-action plans and reports for senior management, engineers, manufacturing teams, and service stakeholders.
  • Support improvement of GM warranty evaluation ratings and drive actions that improve transmission performance and customer satisfaction.
  • Support the plant’s adherence to BIQ IV standards, GQRs, quality procedures, layered audit requirements, and other related audit or assessment activities.
  • Participate in quality reviews, containment activities, problem-solving teams, design and process reviews, and launch or change-management activities as assigned.
  • Support validation of corrective actions through appropriate data, testing, process audits, and effectiveness monitoring.
  • Perform miscellaneous assignments related to quality, reliability, Vehicle plant feedback, warranty, and transmission-line responsibilities.
  • Some travel may be required, to support vehicle assembly plant investigations, and other business needs.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3 years of relevant engineering experience in quality, reliability, manufacturing, powertrain, transmission, vehicle, or warranty.
  • Demonstrated experience with structured problem solving, technical root-cause analysis, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Experience investigating customer issues, warranty concerns, failed parts, or field quality conditions.
  • Experience writing and delivering technical reports, investigation findings, corrective-action updates, and management summaries.
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to communicate technical information clearly to varied audiences.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel (or Google Sheets) competency, including pivot tables, lookups, data organization, charts, and analysis of large datasets.
  • Mechanical aptitude and hands-on skill in transmission, vehicle, or propulsion-system diagnosis, repair, teardown, and component inspection.
  • Proficiency in conducting failure analysis and identifying failure modes and physical or process-related root causes.
  • Skilled in basic metrology and inspection methods, with foundational knowledge of transmission and vehicle design, manufacturing processes, production operations, and service practices.
  • Understanding of quality-system requirements, BIQ IV standards, GQRs, and manufacturing quality processes.
  • Proficiency in technical communication and the ability to maintain effective two-way communication with issue owners, cross-functional teams, plant leadership, suppliers, dealers, and service organizations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective report writing, technical reviews, and investigation delivery.
  • Ability to work overtime and off shift as needed

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • 3+ years of relevant engineering experience in quality, reliability, manufacturing, powertrain, transmission, vehicle, or warranty.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, automotive engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Transmission, propulsion, automotive, or manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with manufacturing quality, warranty, reliability, or field-service processes.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power Apps or similar digital tools.
  • Familiarity with warranty evaluation rating processes, metrics, claim data, and field-quality measures.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
