GM Performance Power Units - Concord, NC Quality – Materials Engineer Intern - Onsite Date of Internship: Summer 2027 Job Summary: GM Performance Power Units in Concord, NC is seeking a Quality Engineer Intern to support materials engineering activities for our Formula 1 power unit components. This internship offers hands-on experience with state of the art analytical equipment and laboratory facilities while working alongside experienced engineers to ensure components meet tight specifications and FIA regulations. Key Responsibilities:
Assist with day to day quality operations along with special projects. Utilize lab instruments and methods including optical and scanning electron microscopy, chemical analysis, and mechanical testing equipment to characterize materials. Assist with data collection, analysis, and reporting to support root cause investigations and process improvements. Help maintain the materials lab, including equipment calibration and organization. Support creation of material and process specifications as well as laboratory procedures. Collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams to learn quality processes and ensure compliance with standards. Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
Currently pursuing a degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field. Interest in materials engineering, processes, testing, and properties. Basic familiarity with CAD software (e.g., NX, SolidWorks) and data analysis tools (e.g., Excel). Coursework involving materials science and engineering. Strong communication and interpersonal abilities Collaboration: Works effectively with internal teams and external partners. Adaptability: Responds effectively to evolving business needs and opportunities. Growth mindset Ability to manage multiple projects independently Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and ability to follow instructions.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, and move in diverse operational environments, including race shops, arenas, and commercial facilities. Comfortable working in variable environmental conditions, including loud, high-traffic, or high-pressure environments.
