Job Description

Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We’re looking for an editor who will drive coverage and plan bold, agenda-setting stories for Seascape, our in-depth global reporting project that investigates marine conservation, ocean health, the creatures and life within them and the communities reliant on them.

This position is a part-time 4-month fixed-term contract or staff secondment, working four days per week.

About the role

  • Drive high-impact print, digital, and visual coverage across Seascapes
  • Support and give guidance to Guardian reporters assigned to the project to enable them to do their best work and work with a network of freelancers around the world.
  • Liaise on commissioning and story development with UK international desks and relevant editorial teams in the US, Australia and elsewhere
  • React confidently to any breaking stories, collaborating with the relevant newsdesks and plan ahead on coverage for key diary events
  • Contribute ideas to daily and weekly meetings
  • Ensure the best presentation and promotion of stories on and off the Guardian’s platform
  • Liaise with design, production, visuals and multimedia desks
  • Commission and edit news content
  • Deal with legal issues on a day to day basis
  • Collaborate with indigenous journalism collectives around the world

About you

  • Experience writing and/or editing for a national/international media organisation
  • Excellent news judgment, high motivation and proactive attitude
  • Demonstrable interest in the environment, science and the seas
  • Commitment to creating world-class journalism
  • Openness to digital tools including social media, data journalism and mobile publishing, and appetite to explore new platforms and media (including podcasts and video)
  • Understanding of Guardian house style and values
  • Media law knowledge
  • Ideally you will have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role and have an interest in global issues.

We actively encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media.

We operate in a hybrid environment working at least two days a week from our offices in King’s Cross in London.

The salary range for this NUJ position starts at £60,748 full-time employment (i.e. £48,598 for part-time, four days a week), with the final offer determined by the successful candidate's skills, experience, and responsibilities.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.

What if my background isn't good enough?
