Build the data foundations that power better outcomes for New Zealanders

At Heartland, we're on a mission to make financial services simpler, smarter and more accessible. As our business continues to grow across New Zealand and Australia, data plays a critical role in helping us serve our customers, support informed decision-making and drive innovation.

We're looking for a Data Engineer to join our established Data & Analytics team and help maintain, optimise and evolve Heartland's enterprise data platform.

This is an ideal opportunity for a Data Engineer who enjoys the balance of business-as-usual (BAU) delivery, operational excellence, stakeholder engagement and continuous improvement, while also contributing to strategic data initiatives.

What you'll do

As a Data Engineer, you'll be responsible for ensuring Heartland's data platforms, pipelines and integrations are reliable, scalable and support the needs of the wider business.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting and maintaining production data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes.
  • Monitoring, troubleshooting and resolving data issues within agreed service levels.
  • Managing BAU data engineering activities to ensure high availability, data integrity and platform performance.
  • Developing and enhancing data integration solutions across multiple systems and platforms.
  • Working closely with Data Analysts, Data Scientists, BI Developers and business stakeholders to deliver trusted data solutions.
  • Optimising data models, data processing performance and storage efficiency.
  • Supporting regulatory, risk, finance and operational reporting requirements through high-quality data delivery.
  • Implementing robust testing, monitoring and data quality controls.
  • Contributing to data platform enhancements, automation initiatives and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Maintaining technical documentation, operational procedures and support processes.
  • Participating in incident management, root cause analysis and problem resolution activities.
  • Supporting cloud-based data platform initiatives and future-state architecture improvements.

What you'll bring

We're interested in hearing from Data Engineers who are technically strong, curious and enjoy solving complex data problems.

Ideally you'll have:

  • Experience in a Data Engineering, Data Warehouse or Analytics Engineering role.
  • Strong SQL development skills.
  • Experience building and supporting ETL/ELT pipelines.
  • Exposure to cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Databricks or similar technologies.
  • Experience working with data integration, transformation and orchestration tools.
  • Knowledge of data modelling, data governance and data quality principles.
  • Understanding of DevOps, CI/CD and release management practices.
  • Experience supporting production environments and resolving operational issues.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • A collaborative approach and desire to continually improve processes and platforms.

Bonus points if you have

  • Experience within banking, financial services or a regulated environment.
  • Knowledge of Azure cloud services.
  • Experience with Python, Spark or data automation frameworks.
  • Exposure to Power BI or enterprise reporting environments.
  • Experience working with large-scale customer and transactional data sets.

Why Heartland?

At Heartland, you'll work with experienced specialists who are passionate about delivering meaningful outcomes through data. You'll have the opportunity to support critical business functions while helping shape the future of Heartland's data capabilities.

We offer:

  • A collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Exposure to modern cloud data technologies.
  • Ongoing learning and development opportunities.
  • A collaborative culture that values diversity, inclusion and continuous improvement.
  • The opportunity to make a real impact in a growing trans-Tasman financial services organisation.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
