🚀 Project Overview

You will be embedded directly into the core Payments Infrastructure and Revenue Engineering team for a global enterprise platform. This team owns high-concurrency, revenue-critical systems that process transactional flows worldwide. Your primary mandate is to accelerate the delivery of near-term payment feature initiatives while systematically clearing a growing backlog of technical debt. Operating in an Agile sprint cadence alongside full-time core engineers and product managers, you will focus on modernizing infrastructure, migrating legacy components, maintaining high reliability, and delivering well-tested, production-grade payment features.

🔍 Key Responsibilities

  • Feature Implementation & Architecture: Build and maintain scalable backend payment flows (including charges, refunds, dispute resolution, and asynchronous webhooks) using Java (primary), Kotlin, and Python.
  • API & Microservice Development: Design, implement, and maintain RESTful and GraphQL APIs, microservices architectures, and event-driven systems consumed by multiple downstream services.
  • Technical Debt & Legacy Modernization: Refactor legacy codebases, execute service migrations, deprecate outdated APIs, and increase test coverage to ensure system resilience and prevent regression issues.
  • CI/CD & Engineering Best Practices: Write clean, production-ready code with strong unit, integration, and contract test coverage. Manage version control, branch workflows, and automated deployment pipelines via GitLab CI/CD.
  • Agile Collaboration & Delivery: Participate in sprint-based delivery, sprint planning, peer code reviews, architectural discussions, and Agile/Scrum ceremonies within a distributed cross-functional team.
  • Observability & Incident Management: Triage and resolve production incidents within high-concurrency payment and billing environments, leveraging logging and monitoring tools.
  • Technical Documentation: Produce architectural designs, API specifications, Knowledge Transfer (KT) documents, and operational runbooks to ensure smooth hand-offs and maintainability.

💡 Must-Have Skills

  • Experience & Domain: 3+ years of backend software engineering experience building and operating production backend services at scale, with direct exposure to payments, fintech, or billing domains (payment gateways, processors, or PSPs).
  • Core Languages: Strong proficiency in Java as the primary language, supplemented by working knowledge of Kotlin and Python.
  • Architecture & Database: Hands-on experience with microservices, event-driven distributed systems (message queues, asynchronous processing, eventual consistency), relational databases (MySQL), and SQL.
  • API & Testing: Expertise in RESTful and GraphQL APIs, writing unit, integration, and contract tests, and designing internal APIs for downstream clients.
  • Payment Life Cycle: Proven track record of building end-to-end backend payment flows, refactoring legacy systems, and resolving payment system production incidents.
  • Tools & Process: Experience with version control and CI/CD via GitLab; task/sprint tracking via Jira; working within Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Execution & Autonomy: Fast ramp-up capability on existing codebases with minimal supervision; strong asynchronous collaboration skills across distributed teams.

✨ Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Enterprise Frameworks: Hands-on experience with Spring Boot, Gradle, and service mesh architectures within a large enterprise engineering organization.
  • Security & Compliance: Familiarity with PCI-DSS compliance, payment security, or financial data handling.
  • Observability Tooling: Experience using Datadog for system monitoring and log analytics.
  • Open Source: Open-source contributions or a portfolio of shipped payment features.

🌐 Time Zone & Collaboration

The role is fully remote, targeting candidates located in the APAC / India region (or regions within a 2-hour offset). Availability to cover Indian Standard Time (IST) hours (preferably 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM IST) is strictly required to ensure seamless asynchronous and synchronous collaboration with the distributed cross-functional team.
