Senior Application Developer (Backend)

We are looking for an experience Senior Application Developer for our client, an established international company in the maritime sector. You will be responsible for developing a suite of data-driven software products, including user-facing applications, backend services, and AI agents, to automate complex processes and solve the company toughest business challenges. This person will work closely with Product Owners, architects, and business stakeholders, translate requirements into robust solutions, and help raise engineering standards, including the responsible use of AI-assisted development tools. The ideal person should be able to work independently, manage priorities and strong communication skills.

Key Responsibilities Software Design & Development

  • Translate business requirements into practical, well-designed software solutions.
  • Lead software design and planning, supported by clear technical documentation.
  • Design, develop and optimise backend services, APIs and asynchronous processes.

Collaboration & Analysis

  • Understand business processes and use cases, and work closely with business users and Product Owners.
  • Provide accurate effort estimates and impact assessments for new features and change requests.
  • Provide an engineering perspective on R&D processes, systems and data flows.

Quality & Operations

  • Participate in testing, identify technical risks and recommend appropriate solutions or mitigation measures.
  • Troubleshoot, debug and support applications in production.
  • Participate in code reviews, design reviews and technical decision-making

Team Contribution & Delivery

  • Provide regular updates on work progress, deliverables and issues

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5years of hands-on application development experience.
  • Proven experience developing web-based backend applications and web services.
  • Experience working closely with Product Owners and/or business users.
  • Experience preparing design documentation and participating in design reviews.
  • Experience working within Agile/Scrum development teams.
  • Hands-one experience with AI coding tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot or Cursor.
  • Proficient in at least one backend technology such as C#, Java, Node.js or Python, with relevant database experience and at least one major cloud platform – Azure, AWS or GCP
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles, design patterns and best practices.
  • Experience with microservices architecture and developing asynchronous processes.
  • Experience with message queues such as SQS, Kafka or RabbitMQ.
  • Working knowledge of modern application deployment infrastructure.
  • Good understanding of networking and information security concepts.
  • Experience in process, application and code optimisation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
