Company Description

IOTA Group is an international technical services and engineering consultancy company supporting major industrial projects worldwide. With over 40 years of experience, we provide specialized engineering expertise and workforce solutions across the Energy, Mining, Oil & Gas, Infrastructure and Industrial sectors.

For one of our international clients, a major player in the mining industry, we are currently seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to contribute to a large-scale mining and mineral processing development project in Namibia.

The project involves the assessment, optimization and engineering development of existing mining infrastructure and processing facilities, with a strong focus on technical reliability, operational efficiency, safety and long-term sustainability.

This opportunity offers the chance to work on a technically challenging international mining project, collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams, EPC/EPCM contractors and specialized equipment suppliers.

Job Description

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating mechanical engineering activities throughout the detailed design and project development phases.

The successful candidate will ensure that mechanical systems, equipment and associated engineering deliverables comply with project specifications, international standards, operational requirements and safety expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

Mechanical Engineering & Detailed Design

  • Lead and review mechanical engineering activities related to mining operations and mineral processing facilities.
  • Oversee the design and engineering of crushing systems, conveyors, stacking equipment, material handling systems, pumps, tanks, agitators, piping networks and associated mechanical packages.
  • Review and validate mechanical engineering deliverables, including equipment lists, technical datasheets, design calculations, general arrangement drawings, piping layouts and 3D models.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable engineering standards, technical specifications and project design criteria.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design reviews with Civil, Structural, Electrical, Instrumentation and Process Engineering teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, maintainability, operational performance and lifecycle costs.

Engineering Coordination & Contractor Management

  • Supervise and technically review mechanical engineering activities performed by EPC/EPCM contractors and external engineering consultants.
  • Coordinate technical interfaces between engineering contractors, equipment manufacturers, suppliers and project stakeholders.
  • Review vendor documentation, equipment specifications and technical submissions.
  • Manage technical queries, engineering deviations and design modifications through established change management procedures.
  • Monitor engineering progress, identify technical risks and recommend corrective actions.

Procurement & Equipment Management

  • Prepare and review mechanical equipment specifications and technical requisitions.
  • Participate in technical bid evaluations and supplier selection processes.
  • Review vendor drawings, equipment datasheets and documentation to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Provide technical support during equipment procurement, manufacturing and delivery.
  • Participate in vendor inspections, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and quality assurance activities.

Construction, HSE & Commissioning Support

  • Provide mechanical engineering support during construction, equipment installation, pre-commissioning and commissioning.
  • Review equipment erection, alignment, inspection and testing requirements.
  • Participate in HAZID, HAZOP and technical risk assessment workshops.
  • Ensure that equipment design considers occupational safety, accessibility, lifting operations, wear resistance, corrosion and maintenance requirements.
  • Support the resolution of site technical queries, non-conformities and engineering modifications.
  • Contribute to mechanical completion activities and commissioning readiness.

Project Performance

  • Support engineering schedules, resource estimates and technical progress reporting.
  • Contribute to project cost estimates and CAPEX assessments for mechanical equipment and installations.
  • Identify risks associated with long-lead equipment, engineering interfaces and design changes.
  • Report technical progress, challenges and recommendations to the Engineering Manager.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in mechanical engineering, preferably within mining, mineral processing, heavy industry or large-scale EPC/EPCM projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in the engineering and design of mechanical equipment for mining and mineral processing operations.
  • Experience supporting construction, equipment installation or commissioning activities is highly desirable.
  • Professional engineering registration with ECN Namibia, ECSA or an equivalent professional body would be an advantage.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong technical knowledge of crushing, conveying, stacking, bulk material handling, pumping, agitation, tanks and industrial piping systems.
  • Proven experience reviewing detailed engineering documentation and mechanical design packages.
  • Good understanding of international engineering codes and standards, including ISO, ASME, API, EN and SANS.
  • Experience working with EPC/EPCM contractors, equipment suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Knowledge of mechanical inspection and quality assurance processes, including ITPs, FAT, welding and NDT.
  • Familiarity with 3D engineering models and mechanical design review tools.
  • Understanding of equipment reliability, maintainability, abrasion, corrosion and mechanical integrity.
  • Knowledge of Namibian technical regulations would be an advantage.
  • Previous experience in nuclear facilities, uranium mining or radiologically controlled environments would be a strong asset.

Personal Skills

  • Excellent technical analysis and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple engineering interfaces and priorities.
  • Autonomous, proactive and results-oriented approach.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
