Technical Sales Specialist-Fire Alarm Sales Engineer

Johnson Controls is hiring for a field-based technical pre-sales role supporting Fire Alarm/Life Safety System sales in the Phoenix market. You will be assigned to a specific territory, and residency within that territory is required because on-site customer visits will be a core part of the role.

Role Overview

In this role, you will partner with local sales teams, electrical contractors, engineers, architects, and customers to support new and retrofit Fire Alarm/Life Safety opportunities. You will help shape technical solutions, review proposals, prepare quotations, and guide customers toward compliant, practical, and value-driven system recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical pre-sales support for new and retrofit Fire Alarm/Life Safety System sales in the Boston market.
  • Review system proposals submitted by local sales teams and electrical contractors to confirm functionality and identify value engineering opportunities.
  • Assist sales representatives with customer facility surveys, including assessment of existing systems and protection needs.
  • Work with internal teams to develop complete quotations, scopes of work, and cost estimates.
  • Deliver demonstrations and presentations of Simplex equipment, alternative system interfaces, and code compliance updates to end users, engineers, architects, contractors, and regulatory authorities.
  • Partner with Sales and Installation teams on system designs, technical requirements, and project specifications.
  • Support newer sales representatives by strengthening product knowledge, application understanding, and confidence in customer conversations.
  • Collect project information, select appropriate products unless otherwise defined by contracts or customers, and prepare clear technical recommendations.
  • Provide guidance on fire and life safety regulations, building codes, and project code requirements.
  • Coordinate bid schedules with electrical contractors and assign projects accordingly.
  • Report weekly on Dodge Opportunities in Planning, Pre-Planning, and Design.
  • Own the Johnson Controls Contractor Connections program and serve as the point of contact for key electrical contractors.
  • Conduct routine customer visits as needed to support relationships and drive customer satisfaction.

How You Will Do It

  • Stay close to the work in your territory by spending time with customers, contractors, and local sales teams to understand project needs and site conditions.
  • Balance technical accuracy with practical value engineering when reviewing proposals, recommending solutions, and helping teams strengthen sales opportunities.
  • Communicate clearly across technical and non-technical audiences so customers, engineers, architects, contractors, and authorities receive consistent, useful guidance.
  • Work with discipline and follow-through on quotations, bid schedules, Dodge reporting, and contractor coordination.
  • Share knowledge openly and support team capability by helping newer sales representatives build product and application expertise.
  • Use a customer-focused, problem-solving approach to remove obstacles, improve responsiveness, and strengthen long-term relationships.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of technical experience with Simplex or Autocall products.
  • Experience in the Fire Detection industry.
  • Exceptional customer service and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Residency within the assigned Boston market territory is required.
  • Ability to perform on-site customer visits as needed.

Nice to Have

  • An Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Familiarity with fire regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Understanding of the sales process.
  • NICET Level 2 certification or higher.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
