This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Inpatient Pediatric Medical Coder based in United States.
This is a full-time, fully remote opportunity focused on accurate and compliant inpatient pediatric medical coding. You will review clinical documentation, diagnoses, procedures, and diagnostic results to assign appropriate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes. The role supports a broad range of pediatric hospital cases, including medical, surgical, cardiac, trauma, and maternal/newborn accounts. You will play an important role in maintaining coding accuracy, reimbursement integrity, regulatory compliance, and timely chart processing. The position combines independent coding responsibilities with collaboration across coding, clinical documentation, billing, IT, and facility teams. Success requires strong attention to detail, sound clinical coding judgment, and the ability to consistently meet quality and productivity expectations. This role is well suited to an experienced inpatient coder who values flexibility, accuracy, accountability, and continuous professional development.
Accountabilities
- Review inpatient pediatric medical records and diagnostic documentation to accurately assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS diagnosis and procedure codes.
- Code a broad range of inpatient accounts, including Medicare and non-Medicare cases, surgical, medical, cardiac, maternal/newborn, and trauma cases.
- Apply current coding regulations, official coding guidelines, Coding Clinic guidance, facility requirements, and third-party billing standards.
- Review charts for complete and appropriate documentation and submit physician queries when information is conflicting, ambiguous, incomplete, or clinically significant.
- Maintain a minimum coding accuracy target of 95% while meeting established productivity expectations, including an average of approximately two inpatient charts per hour.
- Work assigned coding and pending queues daily and ensure charts are coded or appropriately pended within required turnaround times.
- Review quality-assurance queues, communicate corrections, and collaborate with internal quality teams to maintain facility-specific standards.
- Identify and communicate charts requiring rebilling and coordinate corrections with the appropriate facility teams.
- Respond accurately and professionally to coding and billing questions from physicians and hospital stakeholders within established service levels.
- Collaborate with facility and internal IT teams to troubleshoot system issues and maintain effective use of coding and client platforms.
- Keep client portals, email, timekeeping, and billing systems current and accurate throughout the workday.
- Maintain HIPAA-compliant work practices, protect patient privacy, and follow all applicable facility and organizational policies and procedures.
- Maintain required professional credentials and complete assigned continuing education and coding certification requirements.
- Escalate coding discrepancies, operational issues, downtime, or potential delays promptly to administrative and supervisory teams.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent education.
- At least 5 years of experience with inpatient ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding.
- At least 1 year of dedicated inpatient pediatric coding experience.
- Current professional certification through one of the following: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CIC, or CPC.
- Strong working knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, official coding guidelines, Coding Clinic guidance, CMS requirements, and applicable governmental and third-party regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to accurately interpret complex clinical documentation and translate medical information into appropriate codes.
- Strong understanding of inpatient coding, documentation requirements, reimbursement considerations, and compliance standards.
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to balance coding accuracy, productivity, and turnaround requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with physicians, hospitals, coding teams, and supervisors.
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment while collaborating effectively with distributed teams.
- Strong accountability, professionalism, organization, and commitment to patient privacy and data security.
- Experience with Epic is preferred.
- Ability to adapt to changing processes, collaborate constructively, and contribute to a culture focused on quality, service, and continuous improvement.
- Annual salary range: $59,000–$98,000, with actual compensation based on experience, skills, training, certifications, and organizational needs.
