The posting
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Counsel (Medical Malpractice) based in United States.
This is an opportunity for an experienced litigator to take ownership of sophisticated medical malpractice and professional liability matters. You will manage complex cases with significant autonomy, from discovery through trial, while developing strategy and assessing exposure. The role combines substantive litigation, direct client and carrier communication, expert collaboration, and courtroom advocacy. You will work on matters involving healthcare professionals and organizations across a broad range of medical and professional liability cases. The environment is designed for seasoned attorneys who can exercise independent judgment and keep demanding litigation moving forward. You will also have opportunities to mentor less experienced attorneys and cultivate lasting client relationships. With a primarily remote work model and flexibility around court, deposition, trial, and client needs, the role offers both independence and high-level legal work.
Accountabilities:
- Independently manage sophisticated medical malpractice, professional liability, and related litigation matters, including discovery, depositions, motion practice, court appearances, trial preparation, and trials.
- Develop compelling case themes and litigation strategies while anticipating opposing arguments and effectively responding to plaintiff tactics.
- Evaluate liability, damages, exposure, and case value, and drive matters toward appropriate resolution or trial.
- Take and defend depositions and collaborate effectively with medical and other expert witnesses.
- Prepare and review substantive briefs, motions, and other litigation documents.
- Maintain regular communication with clients and insurance carriers, providing clear updates and strategic guidance.
- Cultivate relationships with existing and prospective clients and contribute to the continued development of the practice.
- Work collaboratively with attorneys and legal professionals at different experience levels while maintaining ownership of assigned matters.
- Provide leadership, direction, and mentorship to less experienced attorneys.
- Manage competing deadlines, caseload demands, and timekeeping requirements effectively.
- Attend in-person court appearances, depositions, meetings, trial preparation sessions, and other engagements as required.
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-approved law school.
- Active license to practice law in California.
- At least 8 years of substantial litigation experience, including litigation support, deposition, and trial preparation.
- At least 3 years of medical malpractice experience or significant exposure to medical malpractice litigation.
- Demonstrated ability to independently handle matters through all phases of discovery and trial.
- Experience with insurance defense matters is preferred.
- Strong understanding of case strategy, substantive motion practice, expert management, and litigation procedures.
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Strong time management skills and experience working with timekeeping systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Excellent listening, written, verbal, analytical, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Professional demeanor and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, carriers, colleagues, and opposing counsel.
- Willingness and ability to attend required in-person appearances and meetings.
- Base salary of $160,000–$190,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
- Annual billable-hours bonus starting at $10,000, with an additional $7,500 for each subsequent tier.
- Comprehensive benefits coverage, including plans available at zero employee cost.
- Employer contributions averaging $700–$1,700 annually toward health, vision, dental, and life coverage.
- 401(k) program with a 100% match on the first 3% contributed and a 50% match on the following 4–5%.
- Student loan repayment assistance or a 529 college savings plan for eligible full-time attorneys after one year, with contributions of $100–$200 per month.
- Paid parental leave at base pay.
- $60 monthly technology reimbursement.
- Employee Assistance Program.
- Comprehensive in-house training and leadership development opportunities.
- Firm-provided CLE programs and paid bar license renewal fees.
- Flexible vacation policy for attorneys.
- Defined pathway to partnership.
- Diversity and inclusion initiatives and professional development programs.
- Firm-wide charitable giving opportunities and social and off-site events.
