The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior II Software Engineer based in Canada.

In this remote role, you will design and build high-performance backend systems that support critical platform infrastructure and deliver reliable services at scale. You will lead the architecture and development of low-latency REST APIs, optimize database performance, and strengthen the resilience and security of distributed services. Working primarily with Python, Flask, and SQLAlchemy, you will help establish engineering standards and improve the quality of backend solutions. You will collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to define API contracts, integration patterns, and scalable architectural approaches. The position combines hands-on technical delivery with architectural leadership, design reviews, and mentorship for engineers at different career stages. You will also explore modern AI tooling and agentic workflows while contributing to secure, observable, and fault-tolerant systems in a cloud-based environment.

Accountabilities

  • Architect, design, develop, and evolve scalable, high-throughput, low-latency REST APIs and backend service layers using Python and Flask.
  • Design robust database schemas and optimize queries using SQLAlchemy and relational database technologies to maintain performance, consistency, and availability.
  • Lead technical design reviews, establish backend engineering standards, and promote best practices across development teams.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical guidance and helping strengthen engineering quality and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Implement authentication, rate limiting, and observability capabilities across distributed backend services to improve security, monitoring, and operational reliability.
  • Design fault-tolerant services that handle failures gracefully under heavy workloads, using techniques such as circuit breakers, defensive validation, and resilient error handling.
  • Define and maintain API contracts, versioning strategies, architecture patterns, and integration workflows in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Apply best practices for RESTful architecture, HTTP protocols, and API security to ensure consistent and reliable service interactions.
  • Contribute throughout the full product lifecycle, from architectural planning and implementation to testing, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
  • Support engineering delivery through effective Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, and containerization technologies.
  • Incorporate automated testing, distributed systems principles, event-driven architectures, and observability tools into backend development practices.
  • Explore and apply relevant AI tooling, agentic workflows, transformer architectures, and background processing systems to enhance platform capabilities.
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 10 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Extensive backend development experience using Python, Flask, SQLAlchemy, and relational databases.
  • Deep understanding of RESTful API design, HTTP protocols, API versioning, and secure API development practices.
  • Proven ability to architect and deliver scalable backend systems with high throughput, low latency, and strong reliability.
  • Solid experience with Git-based development workflows, CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, and containerization technologies.
  • Understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing, and fault-tolerant service design.
  • Experience implementing automated testing strategies and integrating observability tools into production systems.
  • Knowledge of authentication mechanisms, rate limiting, defensive validation, circuit breakers, and other backend security and resilience practices.
  • Familiarity with AI development tools, agentic workflows, transformer architectures, and background processing systems.
  • Strong architectural judgment and the ability to make sound technical decisions for complex backend systems.
  • Proven ability to lead technical discussions, conduct design reviews, mentor engineers, and promote consistent engineering standards.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering and technical stakeholder teams.
  • Remote work flexibility: Work remotely from Canada, with flexibility to work from home, an office, or a combination of both, according to role requirements and applicable policies.
  • Competitive compensation: The advertised compensation information references a base salary range of CA$120,400–CA$216,600 per year for the specified U.S.-based candidate category in the original posting; compensation for Canadian candidates may differ based on location, experience, and other relevant factors. The applicable Canadian salary range should be confirmed during recruitment.
  • Incentive opportunities: The compensation package may include annual bonuses or other incentives, equity awards, and an employee stock purchase plan, subject to eligibility.
  • Healthcare and well-being: Access to healthcare and employee support programs, subject to applicable eligibility requirements.
  • Financial benefits: Savings and financial wellness programs, with specific plans and eligibility depending on location.
  • Paid time off: Company holidays, vacation or paid time off, and sick leave, subject to applicable policies.
  • Family support: Family-friendly benefits, including parental leave, subject to eligibility.
  • Employee assistance: Support programs addressing mental and financial well-being.
  • Flexible workplace approach: A work environment designed to support employee autonomy and help individuals perform at their best.
  • Additional benefit details: Specific benefit coverage and eligibility for employees based in Canada should be confirmed with the hiring team.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
