The posting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Software Engineer - Backend based in United States.

This role offers the opportunity to design and deliver scalable backend software within a complex, distributed technology environment. You will architect and develop reliable applications and services while considering performance, maintainability, security, and system-wide impact. The position combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership across large and complex projects involving multiple teams. You will work closely with Product, Design, Operations, Data Science, Business Analysts, and Technical Support to deliver robust solutions. A strong focus on testing, observability, safe coding practices, and production support will help ensure high-quality software throughout its lifecycle. You will also contribute to architecture decisions, mentor junior engineers, and help guide delivery across ambiguous and technically demanding workstreams. This is an opportunity for an experienced backend engineer to take significant ownership while working with a modern technology stack centered around Go and distributed systems.

Accountabilities:

  • Architect and develop efficient, maintainable, and scalable software applications and services.
  • Apply secure coding practices with careful consideration of security, dependencies, and risk mitigation.
  • Evaluate how changes affect other modules, applications, and distributed systems across the broader technology environment.
  • Lead large and complex projects from inception through delivery while collaborating with engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Define architecture for cross-team initiatives and remain accountable for delivering complex workstreams.
  • Create, organize, and assign technical tasks required to complete large-scale projects.
  • Work with complex version-control environments, including concurrent branches and multi-branch merges.
  • Perform unit and integration testing in deployment environments to validate implementations against requirements.
  • Identify gaps in existing testing methodologies and recommend improved frameworks or approaches.
  • Provide implementation and production support to Business Analysts and Technical Support teams, contributing to the diagnosis and resolution of complex issues.
  • Act as a technical specialist when complex matters require detailed evaluation and analysis of multiple variables.
  • Support project leadership with work estimates, staffing requirements, interviews, and software development schedules.
  • Mentor junior software engineers and contribute to the development of engineering best practices.
  • Work independently to deliver increasingly complex projects in environments with ambiguity and evolving requirements.
  • Master of Science degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a directly related field.
  • 3+ years of experience with Golang.
  • 3+ years of experience with Go FX, Thrift, gRPC, Bazel, Message Queues, Grafana, ELK, MySQL, GORM, Go-sqlmock, Goland, VS Code, and Shell Scripting.
  • 2+ years of experience with Redis, Phabricator, Sourcegraph, the Zap logging framework, M3 metrics, and Yarpc.
  • 2+ years of experience working in a transportation or logistics environment.
  • 2+ years of experience with React or AngularJS web development frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, testing, and scalable application development.
  • Experience working with secure coding practices, dependency management, risk mitigation, and production software quality.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to evaluate complex technical issues and identify effective solutions.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience working across engineering and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to lead complex projects, make architecture decisions, and independently manage work with increasing levels of ambiguity.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and contributing to technical direction.
  • Experience with project estimation, task planning, delivery coordination, and resource planning is valuable.
  • Experience may be gained concurrently.
  • Must be able to work in a hybrid environment, with three days per week in the Chicago, Illinois office and up to two days working from home.
  • Must reside within commuting distance of the Chicago, Illinois office.
  • Salary range of $184,993–$211,550 per year.
  • Hybrid work arrangement with up to two days working from home per week.
  • Company-sponsored health plan.
  • Dental and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) matching.
  • Financial wellness and mental wellness benefits.
  • Parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage.
  • Life insurance.
  • Eligibility for performance or sales incentive bonus programs, depending on the role.
  • Potential participation in equity awards.
  • Additional compensation opportunities depending on the role.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
