The Technical Trainer will help develop and strengthen the capabilities of a growing team of electric and autonomous vehicle technicians across the United States. This hands-on role combines advanced automotive expertise with training, mentoring, curriculum development, and technical leadership. You will become a subject matter expert in autonomous vehicle technology while partnering with internal teams, engineering groups, and other stakeholders to translate technical developments into effective learning programs. The role covers both new-hire and ongoing training, with a strong focus on safety, technical knowledge, diagnostics, and continuous improvement. You will work across complex mechanical, electrical, software, and high-voltage systems while helping technicians confidently maintain next-generation vehicles. The position is highly mobile, with travel of up to 75%, and offers significant exposure to an evolving autonomous and electric vehicle environment.
Accountabilities
- Create and maintain technical learning curricula focused on skills development, knowledge retention, and continuous improvement for EV and AV technicians.
- Coach and mentor technicians to strengthen core technical capabilities and identify opportunities for improved performance and processes.
- Partner with field teams and management to identify technical knowledge gaps and develop targeted remediation and development plans.
- Deliver training programs for new hires as well as ongoing technical development for existing technicians and management staff.
- Work with leadership to identify training and development needs and create learning plans that help technical teams meet or exceed operational and business objectives.
- Develop training processes, procedures, and programs that support the growth and scalability of the technical training function.
- Maintain expert knowledge of the methods, techniques, parts, tools, equipment, and materials used to diagnose, maintain, and repair electric and autonomous vehicles.
- Develop and deliver technical training solutions that enable service employees to perform their work safely and in accordance with applicable environmental, health, and safety standards.
- Collaborate with Operations, EHS, engineering, and Field Engineering teams to keep training content aligned with new procedures, technical updates, and evolving vehicle technologies.
- Develop product-specific training covering complex automotive and electromechanical systems, including powertrains, passive restraint systems, steering, suspension, braking, thermal management, and high-voltage DC systems.
- Anticipate technical and operational challenges, lead complex problem-solving initiatives, and help teams adapt to emerging technologies and procedures.
- Support a consistent learning experience across technical teams by translating complex systems and procedures into clear, practical training materials and instruction.
- Bring strong automotive systems repair knowledge combined with demonstrated technical training experience.
- Have at least 8 years of hands-on automotive experience covering areas such as braking, advanced suspension, alignment, electrical diagnosis and repair, software or firmware updates, air conditioning systems, complex hardware retrofits, and integrated hardware/software diagnostics.
- Have hands-on experience diagnosing and repairing electric and/or hybrid vehicles and the ability to understand, interpret, and explain mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
- Understand how mechanical, electrical, software, and electromechanical systems interact within complex automotive environments.
- Be comfortable using hand tools, power tools, automotive shop equipment, lifts, floor jacks, impact tools, air tools, and related workshop equipment.
- Demonstrate strong technical aptitude and the ability to quickly learn and master emerging technologies, while being proficient with office, communication, and learning technologies.
- Be proactive, adaptable, confident, professional, and self-directed in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrate confidence when working with customers, technicians, leadership, and other stakeholders.
- Be able to act as a technical partner and consultant to leadership and field teams while building collaborative relationships across functions.
- Demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, including the ability to anticipate potential setbacks and develop practical solutions.
- Be physically capable of performing regular hands-on work, including stooping, bending, lifting, moving, and positioning objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Hold a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.
- A university degree or certificate in Automotive Technology is a plus.
- ASE certifications are preferred.
- Experience with automotive sensors, calibration, or autonomous vehicle technologies is advantageous.
- Dealership training or additional automotive industry experience is beneficial.
- Familiarity with Linux, Java, Python, C++, Jira, Confluence, G-Suite, or Slack is a plus.
- Knowledge of environmental, health, and safety requirements is advantageous.
- A valid U.S. passport is considered a plus.
- Be willing and able to travel up to 75% as required by the role.
- Be comfortable working in environments that may involve heavy traffic, dust, diesel fumes, noise, outdoor conditions, and varying weather.
- Be able to access different areas of vehicles and equipment and perform work that may require bending, crouching, kneeling, crawling, and other physically demanding movements.
- Annual salary range of $100,000–$130,000, depending on location and experience.
- Weekly pay, with employees paid every Friday.
