Position Summary

The Staff Project Engineer is a senior engineer responsible for executing complex projects across Kodiak Gas Services' portfolio. The role provides hands-on engineering from scope definition and design through procurement, fabrication, construction, commissioning, startup, and turnover for natural gas compression, power generation, facility development, and infrastructure projects. This position is accountable for safe, technically sound, constructible, and cost-effective project outcomes.

Working as part of integrated project teams, the Staff Project Engineer owns assigned engineering deliverables, coordinates technical interfaces, supports field execution, and drives issues and actions to closure. The position works directly with Project Managers, Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, Construction, HSE, Finance, contractors, vendors, and customers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Execute assigned compression, power generation, facility, and infrastructure projects as the staff-level project engineering individual contributor.
  • Develop and maintain the engineering scope, design basis, technical specifications, equipment requirements, deliverable register, work packages, and execution plan.
  • Perform and coordinate technical reviews of drawings, calculations, data sheets, vendor documents, procedures, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Manage interfaces among engineering disciplines, equipment packages, vendors, contractors, operations, and customer requirements.
  • Resolve design, constructability, operability, quality, and field execution issues using sound engineering judgment and timely decision-making.
  • Coordinate engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, commissioning, and startup activities for assigned projects.
  • Develop engineering schedules and look-ahead plans, identify dependencies and critical technical milestones, and maintain alignment with the integrated project schedule.
  • Monitor engineering and vendor progress, identify emerging schedule impacts, and implement practical recovery actions with the project team.
  • Support procurement through technical bid evaluations, vendor clarification, purchase specification development, and review of supplier deliverables.
  • Support construction and commissioning through field visits, responses to technical questions, inspections, testing, punch-list resolution, startup planning, and turnover documentation.
  • Develop engineering estimates and support project budgets, forecasts, commitments, cash flow projections, and cost-to-complete evaluations for assigned work.
  • Evaluate technical alternatives and recommend solutions that balance safety, performance, constructability, schedule, lifecycle cost, and operational requirements.
  • Monitor project performance against approved scope, budget, and schedule and identify variances affecting engineering execution.
  • Develop or recommend corrective actions to control cost, protect milestones, and maintain technical quality.
  • Maintain accurate engineering action logs, decision records, deliverable status, technical risks, and other project execution information.
  • Provide concise updates on engineering status, key decisions, schedule and cost impacts, technical risks, and forecast outcomes.
  • Prepare and present technical recommendations, design reviews, execution updates, and escalation items to project and business stakeholders.
  • Use project data, dashboards, and business intelligence tools to identify trends and support timely execution decisions.
  • Capture lessons learned and contribute technical and process expertise to improve project execution practices and internal systems.
  • Identify, assess, document, and actively manage project risks related to scope, engineering, schedule, cost, resources, quality, and execution.
  • Evaluate scope changes, budget revisions, schedule impacts, technical deviations, and change orders for assigned projects.
  • Prepare required documentation, obtain approvals, and maintain traceable records of project changes and decisions.
  • Facilitate working-level risk reviews and implement mitigation actions with project teams and stakeholders.
  • Work directly with Commercial, Project Managers, Engineering, Operations, Construction, Supply Chain, Finance, and HSE to execute projects successfully.
  • Coordinate technical submittals, equipment data, vendor deliverables, contractor work, field questions, inspections, testing, and turnover requirements.
  • Participate in project reviews, stage-gate processes, design reviews, lessons learned, commissioning planning, and operational readiness activities.
  • Prepare and report estimated project costs and revenues to align with applicable revenue recognition requirements for each project. Coordinate with Accounting and Audit to ensure adherence to relevant controls.
  • Demonstrate and promote accountability, transparency, safety, technical rigor, and operational excellence.

Education, Experience & Training

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field required.
  • Professional Engineer licensure or master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in project engineering, engineering design, project management, construction, commissioning, or capital project execution.
  • Demonstrated experience independently executing complex, multidisciplinary projects and resolving technical and project interface issues.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting large-scale industrial, energy, EPC, midstream, compression, infrastructure, manufacturing, or power generation projects.
  • Working experience with project scheduling, cost control, forecasting, risk management, change control, and performance reporting.
  • Experience coordinating engineering deliverables, vendors, contractors, construction activities, commissioning, and project turnover.

Preferred Certifications

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • Other relevant engineering, project management, construction, or commissioning certifications

  • Strong understanding of engineering, procurement, manufacturing, construction, commissioning, and startup processes.
  • Excellent technical, analytical, and financial acumen with the ability to evaluate complex project information and develop practical solutions.

  • Clear written and verbal communication, technical presentation, and stakeholder coordination skills.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
