The posting

Position: Electrical Design Engineer Location: Labman HQ, Stokesley, North Yorkshire Salary: £40,000 - £55,000 (based on experience) Employment Type: Full-Time (Monday - Friday 37.5hrs)

At Labman Automation, we design and build bespoke robotic systems that enable science through technology. Our work supports global customers across industries from pharmaceuticals to materials science, developing automation that makes the world’s most advanced research faster, safer, and more sustainable.

As an Electrical Design Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the electrical design of bespoke robotic systems, but this is not a desk-based design role. You’ll be hands-on with the equipment you design, working directly on our machines throughout the build, test and commissioning process.

You’ll design electrical systems and then get involved in bringing them to life, including panel and machine wiring, testing, fault-finding, commissioning and integration. We’re looking for someone who enjoys practical engineering just as much as the design side.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design electrical control systems for bespoke robotic and automation systems.
  • Design single and three-phase power circuits, DC power circuits, servo and stepper motor systems, IO, sensors and safety circuits.
  • Produce, understand and interpret electrical drawings and component datasheets.
  • Get hands-on with machine builds, carrying out electrical wiring, panel and machine integration, testing and commissioning.
  • Physically fault-find electrical issues on machines using appropriate diagnostic equipment and make modifications where required.
  • Support machine safety risk assessments and determine functional safety requirements.
  • Work closely with mechanical, software and project teams throughout the machine build and communicate project status, issues and requirements.
  • Participate in the full lifecycle of projects, from initial electrical design through hands-on build and testing to installation at customer sites worldwide where required.
  • Work in line with relevant EU and ISO standards, directives and legislation.

What You’ll Need:

  • Minimum HNC Level 4 in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
  • 3+ years' relevant electrical engineering experience.
  • Strong practical electrical skills and a genuine willingness to get hands-on with machine wiring, testing and fault-finding.
  • Experience using SEE Electrical or another electrical drawing package to produce IEC electrical drawings.
  • Ability to read electrical drawings and component datasheets and translate the design into the physical machine build.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Good time management, organisation and attention to detail.

Desirables

  • Strong fault-finding skills, including the use of electrical diagnostic equipment.
  • Experience wiring and commissioning industrial machinery or automation systems.
  • Experience with industrial fieldbuses.
  • Knowledge of functional safety and relevant standards, ideally ISO 13849.

Company benefits:

  • 33 day's annual holiday (rising to 38 over 5 years) inc. public holidays
  • Private Healthcare with Aviva
  • 5% employer pension (no upper earnings cap)
  • Travel opportunities in various roles
  • Enhanced maternity Pay (long service applicable)
  • Enhanced Paternity leave
  • CPD support and annual subscription to appropriate body covered
  • Free inhouse gym, squash, bouldering wall, and countless clubs

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
