Job Description

We have an opening for a Technical Consultant / System Administration Liaison. This position will act as a Technical Consultant within Livermore Computing’s Hotline, providing tier 1 support for end users of LC’s high-performance computers and platform services. In addition, this role will act as a liaison between the Hotline and system administrators within LC, ensuring user issues are effectively escalated and assigned to appropriate tier 2/3 staff for timely resolution. On a project basis outside of Hotline shifts, you will perform assigned DevOps and system-administration tasks to ensure the team’s systems and services are maintained, updated, and enhanced. This position is in the Livermore Computing Division within the Computing Directorate.

This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home 1 day per week.

You will

  • Engage directly with HPC customers who use our tools and systems, delivering timely, customer-focused support and guidance.
  • While owning support tickets, collaborate closely with technical teams across LC to support resolution of moderately complex user issues that span multiple systems or functions.
  • Contribute to documentation and training efforts to support effective use of LC’s HPC systems.
  • Coordinate with system-administration teams to escalate tickets appropriately and facilitate effective communication between Hotline staff and Tier 2/3 technical staff.
  • Collaborate on building system administration tools that allow tier 1 Hotline staff to handle a wider variety of support calls.
  • Assist with administering Linux and OpenShift clusters within the Platform Services Group under established procedures and technical guidance.
  • Maintain knowledge of LC systems, supported applications, and services while assisting with maintenance of internal Hotline tooling.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active DOE Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in both a multi-disciplinary team environment and a customer service environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated experience of scripting and programming languages, such as Perl, Python, and bash/csh/ksh.
  • Experience with system administration in a clustered environment, such as HPC Linux clusters or OpenShift.
  • Ability to work independently within the scope of assigned work, using established methods and procedures to resolve moderately complex problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with HPC user environments and workflows, including building and using software in a CLI environment and running HPC jobs.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with configuration management systems such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef or Salt.
  • Familiarity with HPC schedulers such as Slurm and Flux, both from user and administrator standpoints.
  • Familiarity with code development platforms such as GitLab or GitHub.

Pay Range

$146,340 - $185,544 annually

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
