The posting

Overview LWCC is seeking an Insurance Intern for a cross-functional learning experience spanning key workers’ compensation insurance departments – Claims and Policyholder Services (PHS). The internship is designed to help a student understand how insurance, specifically workers' compensation, works as an integrated system, from evaluating and servicing a policy to responding when a workplace injury occurs. Through structured training, job shadowing, hands-on assignments, and exposure to multiple departments, the intern will see how Underwriting, PHS Operations, Premium Audit, Safety Services, Claims Teams, and Claims Operations work together to serve Louisiana businesses and injured workers. The intern program will run from June 8 - July 29, 2027. The program is Tuesday - Thursday, 8 am - 4 pm at LWCC's office (2237 S. Acadian Thruway, Baton Rouge, LA). Learning Objectives

Build foundational knowledge of the workers' compensation insurance policy and claim lifecycles. Learn how Underwriting, PHS Operations, Premium Audit, Safety Services, Claims Teams, and Claims Operations connect and share information. Develop professional communication, analytical thinking, customer service, and presentation skills. Assemble and present a summary of internship learnings and the end-to-end workers' compensation process through a Capstone Project featuring an AI Agent.

Responsibilities

Underwriting

Learn the fundamentals of workers' compensation underwriting, policy structure, classifications, pricing, and policy servicing. Assist, under supervision, with reviewing new-business submissions, renewals, endorsements, and policy-processing workflows. Gain exposure to LWCC workers' compensation policies, NCCI Basic Manual rules, relevant Louisiana workers' compensation requirements, and company policies and procedures. Observe how policy information and underwriting decisions affect downstream audit, safety, and claims activities.

PHS Operations

Assist with customer service for agent partners, policyholders, underwriters, and internal stakeholders. Assist with processing policy endorsements and responding to internal and external service requests. Learn how operational workflows support the policy lifecycle and connect with Claims.

Premium Audit

Learn how premium audits validate payroll, classifications, and other exposure information used to determine final premium. Assist with gathering and reviewing business records and audit information under supervision.

Safety Services

Learn how Safety Services partners with policyholders to identify hazards and strengthen workplace safety practices. Observe how loss-prevention efforts may affect underwriting decisions and claim outcomes.

Claims

Shadow experienced Claims Representatives and specialists to learn how work-related injury claims are handled from intake through resolution. Observe the investigation process, including the collection and review of information from policyholders, injured workers, witnesses, medical providers, and other relevant sources. Review claim-related documents such as medical records, medical bills, SIU, claims recovery, and insurance forms under appropriate supervision. Participate in training that introduces claim evaluation, reserving concepts, benefit delivery, return-to-work considerations, and stakeholder communication.

Cross-Functional Learning and Projects

Complete assigned research, process-improvement, administrative, or operational projects. Prepare and deliver a final presentation summarizing key learnings about the end-to-end workers' compensation process.

Preferred Qualifications

Currently enrolled in (or recently graduated from) an accredited college or university. Coursework in insurance, risk management, business, finance, accounting, safety, healthcare, data analytics, or a related field is helpful but not required. Interest in learning how insurance operations and workers' compensation support employers and injured workers. Strong written and verbal communication skills, professionalism, curiosity, and a customer-focused mindset. Ability to maintain confidentiality and use sound judgment when working with business, medical, financial, or claim information.

Why it works

3×

more interviews than doing it yourself with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT writes a CV and never learns what happened to it. We see every reply. For each CV we know:

  • How it was written, and how the review scored it
  • When we applied, and how long after the posting went up
  • Which posting, which company, which city
  • Who got the interview, and who heard nothing

That is how we know which CVs get called.
